Sianovo caves: to go or not to go?

Sianovo caves can not be called a miracle of nature. The most famous as quarries, these artificial underground corridors were formed during the construction of Moscow. It was here that limestone was mined, which became the basis of "white stone". Sianovo caves are among the five oldest and largest underground systems in Russia. They are located in the Domodedovo district, approximately 12 km from the Moscow Ring Road. Inside the underground corridors you can always meet people, there are a lot of visitors. Many caves are equipped with landmarks or sights that can be found using special maps compiled by enthusiasts.

Sianovo caves emerged around the 17th century, were most actively used in the 19th and 20th centuries, after which they were closed. The entrance to them was covered and closed for access, until the enthusiasts unearthed it. Not so long ago, the main vertical entrance and some horizontal tunnels were fortified in the caves. The main lases and passages are located at a depth of 25 meters. The total length of the tunnels is about 19 km.

When planning the descent into the Sianovo caves, it should be taken into account that the internal air temperature does not exceed 7-10 degrees at a relative humidity of about 80%. The indices of the radiation background inside do not exceed the norm.

Throughout the year, many people visit the Sianovo caves, excursions to which can be an interesting and exciting way to spend a day off. The most popular time of year for a hike is winter. In autumn and spring, visitors to caves are much smaller due to high humidity.

Sianovo caves have long been a popular tourist destination. Fans of the thrill spend there but a few days or even weeks. Many caves are equipped with everything necessary for living underground. They can see chairs and tables for rest and eating. Special containers with water are located in places where water seeps from above. All these objects can be found on special maps, which are compiled by enthusiastic fans of underground research. Sianovo caves, photos of which amaze and delight, are almost safe to visit. But beginners, of course, should follow certain rules. Inside it is forbidden to kindle fires, as smoke can lead to uncontrolled consequences and harm people. When descending into the caves, it is compulsory to enroll in the notebook of visits. There it is necessary to specify the time of descent and the estimated time of ascent to the surface. This information is constantly checked by the rescuers, who in a timely manner can begin to search for the missing.

Equipment for descent under the ground should protect from cold, moisture and possible impacts. Under the ground it will be easy to get dirty, so do not put on a lot of dressing. It is better to choose clothes from technological materials. For each participant of the expedition it is necessary to take a card. Also mandatory is the presence of two lanterns for each person. When traveling underground, do not diverge, it is better to stay together and explore the caves in a good company.
