Shibori tapes: how to make and use in modern handmade

Recently, jewelry made by craftsmen using beads, beads and shibori ribbons has gained great popularity. However, not all needlewomen have heard of these hand-stained silk ribbons. The ornaments created with their help look very bright and original. But it is necessary to understand more in detail what shibory is and how they can be made.

Shibori ribbon and its features

Shibori - a corrugated ribbon of silk, painted by hand. The word "shibori" is translated as "knot", it denotes one of the ways of coloring fabrics by twisting, squeezing, binding, etc.

Decorative tape easily lies at any angle due to the fact that it is cut "on a scythe". In this case, the edges are not processed, thanks to such a cutting they do not crumble. Choosing a ribbon for yourself, you need to consider that the color of silk will be different from what you see in the picture. The tapes are painted by hand, and the shades will still differ from each other. It should also be understood that the corrugation should not necessarily be even, parallels may not be sustained.

The history of the appearance of the shobory tape

In China, the term "shibori" means one of the ways of manually dyeing a tissue. Each hank of such a tape is unique, and all because of the fact that it is first twisted, knotted, folded in a certain way, and then paint colors of different colors, due to this the pattern is always unique. It is impossible to repeat it a second time.

Shibori (nodular staining) began to be used in the VIII century by ordinary masters, initially for this purpose they used the only available indigo color. Wealthy citizens and samurai started using this coloring for fabric finishing only in the 14th century. At the same time, the patterns became more complex, as they began to use various colors and additional staining methods.

How to make a ribbon shibori (corrugated silk) with your own hands

If you do not have the opportunity to buy corrugated silk or can not find it, then you can make shibori yourself. It is necessary to prepare:

  • Water;
  • iron;
  • vinegar;
  • A clean cotton napkin.

The first step is to dilute the water with vinegar at the rate of 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar per 200 ml of water. In the resulting solution, silk should be soaked for 20 minutes. Then it must be wrung out and spread on a clean cotton napkin.

At home, to get the effect of fine corrugation is very difficult, but possible. Silk should be rolled from the center and ironed through the cloth by the edge of the iron. The process is laborious, but the finished result is worth the effort.

Creation of Shibori

Silk colored strips of fabric, decorated in the original technique, can be purchased at the store. However, shibori ribbons can also be made with their own hands, with a little effort. For work it is necessary to prepare:

  • A wide stick (made of wood or plastic);
  • Tapes and threads;
  • Paints for fabrics;
  • Bowl with wide edges;
  • Water;
  • Sponge or brushes for staining;
  • iron;
  • Newspaper to protect the surface.

First, the corrugated silk should be folded into a ribbon, while it should be slightly moist. Then it must be screwed off and wound on the stick, which was prepared earlier.

The secret of the ribbon of shibori is that it is colored, while only the edges of the fold are colored, and the colors should be combined with each other. Therefore, you only need to paint the folds, for this it is most convenient to use a sponge.

Completely colored tape is left on the stick above the pelvis until completely dry. In this case, the fabric should be placed away from direct sunlight and heating devices.

The dried tape should be ironed well along the folding line. Further, with the help of the newspaper, it is rolled up and wrapped in polyethylene for sealing. Conviction is sent to the water bath for 1.5 hours - so the paint will be even better attached to the fabric. Then the fold line is ironed once more. Now the shibori ribbons, the master class for the manufacture of which was described above, are completely ready for use.
