Salmonella in a child. Causes of infection and treatment

Salmonella is an intestinal infection that is transmitted to humans mainly along with food. Bacteria are quite tenacious, adaptable to any environment. In meat and dairy products, salmonella not only live well, but also actively breed. The disease begins to manifest itself within three days after the entry into the body of harmful bacteria that settle in the intestine. After fixing, they begin to allocate a special toxin, which causes salmonellosis in the child.

How is salmonella transmitted?

  1. Most often, infection is transmitted through the meat of domestic animals. Cows, pigs, ducks, chickens, goats and others. Here you can include sausages, sausages, various semi-finished products, minced meat.
  2. A fairly common method is infection after eating raw eggs.
  3. Carriers can be pets. Cats, dogs and especially rodents.
  4. Infection from birds that can carry bacteria anywhere.
  5. Salmonella in a child may appear after drinking unpasteurized or unboiled milk.
  6. From a person with salmonella. Far from always a person who carries the bacterium-pathogens of this disease in his organism, is ill himself, sometimes he becomes a carrier of infection. Infection can occur due to contact of the carrier or patient with food.

Symptoms of the disease

Symptoms can appear quite abruptly, they can gradually roll, and in the case that the person is only a carrier, then there is absolutely no. Initially, there is a chill and a fever of 39 degrees. This is accompanied by headaches, general weakness, severe cramping pains in the abdomen, vomiting and nausea. The main difference between salmonella and other intestinal infections is the stool. It is liquid, watery, green in color, strongly foaming and very offensive. Periodicity 5-10 times a day. On the third day, blood and mucus can be found in the stool.

Prophylaxis of salmonellosis

  • The most important rule is observance of personal hygiene;
  • Meat boil and cook until ready, meat products (sausages, sausages) do not eat raw, must boil;
  • For cutting different product groups do not use one board. For meat, one for fish, another for vegetables, the third;
  • Always store raw food in a cool place, each in a separate, sealed package;
  • Eggs should be washed before cooking (especially if dough is prepared), since bacteria can be on the shell;
  • Control the shelf life of products;
  • Milk purchased on a spill, without fail to boil;
  • Isolation of the patient, as the disease is contagious. If a pediatrician suspects salmonellosis in a child, the patient is sent to the infectious department and is treated in a separate box.

Treatment of salmonellosis

As already mentioned, the patient is hospitalized. Treatment is appointed after confirmation of the diagnosis, which is evident from the results of the patient's tests. Some Salmonella species do not respond to antibiotics, so do not be surprised if the doctor has ignored their appointment. The main task is to eliminate dehydration and remove toxins from the child's body.

To remove the symptoms of intoxication and alleviate the condition will help wash the stomach. Thus, some of the toxins and bacteria are removed from the body.

Salmonella in the child causes dehydration, to prevent loss of fluid, the patient is allowed to drink solutions of powders "Regidron", "Oralite" or "Glucosolan".

Then the child is fully examined by the treating physician, after that the most appropriate medicine is appointed for the destruction of bacteria.

All treatment is accompanied by mandatory strict diet.
