How the Rostov Hippodrome appeared

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Rostovsky's favorite pastime was the trotter race. As a rule, the owners of horses were rich merchants. Basically, Armenians and Russians bought horses in central Russia, and then boasted to each other with fast horses. It was at that time that the merchants received land for running trotters. It was later founded by the Rostov Hippodrome (Address: Rostov-on-Don city, Malyuginoy street, house 233). Of course, at first the racetrack was rather pathetic. There was only one path, two cold stables and a small tribune of wood, which had to be repaired all the time.

A little later, near the racetrack, the land was allocated under a racecourse, as the organization of horse racing enthusiasts was much richer and more numerous. On the territory, a two-storey house and a huge tribune were quickly built, as well as several spacious stables. Moreover, the whole territory of the complex was fenced with a beautiful fence made of wood. As a result, in 1894 the first races took place in Rostov.

Seven years later, the founders of the racecourse for racing suggested that the ryse society begin working together on their territory, as it was closer to the city center. Having received the consent, the founders of the racecourse transported their horses and all their equipment to a new place. Since then, 1902 is considered the date of the foundation of the Rostov Hippodrome. It is from this date that his work is counted. At this time in Rostov was on trial the best, but a few livestock of Don horses. In 1919, only 172 horses were tested. True, they belonged not only to the breeders of the Russian south.

Rostov Hippodrome in the Civil War

In the Civil War, agriculture was completely destroyed and ruined. All stud farms were liquidated. Hunger destroyed the remnants of horse-breeding. Gradual restoration of horse breeding in the south of Russia began with the North Caucasus. In 1920, from private ownership, they began to seize all horses that could be suitable for breeding. A year later on the Rostov Hippodrome, reviews about which in most cases are positive, the first tribal horses captured in various places of the Kuban, the Don and the Ciscaucasia began to arrive. With the advent of new horses, the racetrack was visited by jockeys and coaches. They helped in the identification of horses captured by whites. Among the horses brought from Moscow were such thoroughbred stallions as Shamrat, Simpatyaga, Beck, Saigon, Satyr, Anchar, Pamphlet, Cylinder. Subsequently, some of them will become the ancestors of the Terek and Budyonnov breeds.

In some years, up to five hundred horses of the most diverse breeds were tested for one race season: Trakehner, Terek, Budyonnov, Akhal-Teke, Don and English thoroughbred.
