Rose Queen Elizabeth: Queen of the Garden

The elegant and rather laconic beauty of the famous tea-hybrid rose bearing the name of the English Queen Elizabeth II is known far beyond the Albion. Brought out in the middle of the last century, Rose Queen Elizabeth became the ancestor of a separate group of roses - the famous grandiflora today. This culture, its features and preferences will be discussed in this publication.

A bit of history

The hybrid rose Charlotte Armstrong and the orange-red floribunda of Floradora in 1954, rose Queen Elizabeth became an unexpected experimental variety, distinct from all existing groups at the time, and recognized as the bearer of all the best qualities of culture.

This rose was markedly different from the then usual species: it was a very strong bush with spectacular large flowers resembling tea-hybrid varieties, and stems growing in bundles, as in the floribunda crops. These features have become the main criteria that prompted the selection science to classify Queen Elizabeth as the ancestor of a new group - grandiflora.

Rose Queen Elizabeth: description

Comments of gardeners about one of the most exquisite varieties of roses are unanimous - Queen Elizabeth is not only surprisingly beautiful, which was repeatedly proved by awarding her prizes and awards at prestigious world exhibitions, but also remarkably unpretentious in growing. Simplicity in the cultivation of roses allows you to cope with the cultivation of this decorative beauty for both experienced and novice growers.

The bush is tall, not spreading, reaches 100-110 cm in height. In southern regions it can grow to 1.5-1.8 m. Shoots are medium-leafed. For the variety not only beautiful inflorescences, but also decorative glossy leaves are characteristic.

The magnificent flowers of the culture are especially attractive: large (in diameter up to 10 cm), reminiscent of the shape of a glass with a high center, saturated dense pink. Each flower forms up to 25-40 petals - tender and beautiful. The outer petals are slightly wavy, they bend downward. Internal lobes close up loosely, forming a loose core. The buds are elongated of light red color, in the stage of full blossoming the flowers change their shape, passing from the goblet to the flat one, and noticeably turn pale, becoming gently pink. Flowers have a gentle unobtrusive aroma.

Rose Queen Elizabeth (grandiflora) is appreciated by the world selection associations. For more than half a century of history the brand was awarded with high awards. The fact that already in 1955 Queen Elizabeth rose, having passed a complex procedure for assessing the qualities of culture, became the winner of AARS, and in 1979 by the Rose of the World, speaks of very high decorative conditions.

Advantages of culture

The generally recognized advantages of this variety are:

  • The ability to form a compact neat and yet powerful bush with bright dark green dense leathery leaves and large spikes.
  • High resistance to typical diseases.
  • Good winter hardiness, resistance to temperature changes and bright sunlight, petals of flowers are not subject to burning out, do not lose decorativeness throughout the flowering period.
  • Generous long flowering.
  • Successful propagation by propagation.

Rosa Queen Elizabeth: growing

The qualitative development of culture is ensured by the correct selection of the site. The plant does not tolerate strong through winds, so the place under the landing is selected carefully. In addition to protection from winds, the site should be well illuminated by the sun, since it depends on the degree of illumination that determines the decorative nature of the plant. The shading of the bush causes the grinding of flowers and a significant decrease in decorativeness.

Rosa Queen Elizabeth, whose description is presented, loves well-drained, fertile, loose soils. To plant a crop is preferable in the spring, in the middle of May.

Landing

Preliminary preparation of the plant is necessary: the seedling shortens the shoots to 3-5 buds, cutting off the weakened growths, pruning the roots and leaving it in the water with the addition of a biostimulator (for example, "Zircon") for 24 hours. The soil on the site for planting is prepared in advance, digging with humus and the necessary fertilizer complex.

Planting a young culture, follow its correct location: the root neck is buried into the ground at 10 cm. Upon completion of the landing, the soil is well compacted, the stock circle is watered abundantly.

Care of the culture

Rose Hybrid Hybrid Queen Elizabeth - a culture that is sensitive to excessive moisture and stagnation of groundwater. However, a lack of water can be very negative, a significant shortage will ruin a plant. Therefore, moderation of irrigation is extremely important, but during the period of rooting and vegetation their intensity is increased. Optimal watering by 10 liters every 10-12 days is considered, but you should definitely orient yourself on the weather in the region. By the end of the summer, watering is reduced, gradually reducing them to none. But before wintering, the culture is watered again.

An important aspect of care is the weeding and loosening of the soil under the bush, which should be carried out periodically. You can swallow the trunks with wood chips, humus or any other garden material.

Scaffolding helps to maintain the decorativeness of the culture - autumn and spring. Once in 6-7 years, the culture is rejuvenated, carrying out radical pruning. An indispensable condition for good growth of the bush is timely fertilizing: in spring, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are needed, in the flowering period and preparation for it - phosphate-potassium fertilizers. These same drugs, made for the winter, will help the culture survive the cold season.
