The third time he was nominated for an Oscar in 2014 for the most successful film in his career - "Otrobychestvo."

Richard Linklater, biography

The director was born in 1960, July 30, in Houston, Texas. His childhood was spent in the estate of his grandmother and grandfather on the maternal line. After school, he enrolled in the literary department of the University of Houston, intending to become a writer. However, the lack of money forced the young man to leave his studies and get a job on the platform of a Mexican oil company. All his spare time Richard Linklater devoted to reading books.

At the age of twenty, the future director became interested in cinema. Once on the set, he was fascinated by the atmosphere of the creative process. Soon, Richard Linklater decided to devote his life to the cinema, bought an 8-millimeter Super-8 camera, a projector and the necessary equipment for editing. Then he moved to the city of Austin, because there was a college for the preparation of documentary filmmakers.

Carier start

A serious stimulus for Linklater was the Martin Scorsese film "Raging Bull" in 1981, telling of battles without rules and about the mafia controlling the competition. Having looked at the film countless times, Richard Linklater concluded that it is necessary to put such action-packed films that keep the viewer in constant tension. In addition, the future director realized that much depends on the material base of the film project.

After several months of experiments with film technology, Linklater began to create his first film, which he called "It's impossible to learn how to plow while reading books." Filming lasted more than a year, and the same amount was spent on installation work. The film did not make a special impression at the box office, moreover, box office fees barely paid back the costs.

The first successful project

The next film, Linklater, called "Bezdelnik" was more successful, although its budget was only 23 thousand dollars. The film was dedicated to Austin residents and talked about their lives for one day. The film attracted the attention of critics, was nominated for the Grand Prix in Sundance.

In 1993, Richard Linklater withdrew his second feature film, which was called "Under the buzz in turmoil." This time the budget of the film project amounted to six million dollars. In the center of the plot is a group of schoolchildren from rich families on the last day of their studies in 1976. In the film, even the little-known actors Milla Jovovich and Ben Affleck were shot. The director and in this film limited himself to the events of one day.

The plot with the continuation

In 1995, Linklater created the first film from the famous trilogy, which was called "Before the Dawn." An American, a student of Jess, is heading to Vienna to fly from there to the United States. Celine, a Frenchwoman, is going to fly from Vienna to France, enter the Sorbonne. A young man proposes to stay in Vienna, one of the most romantic cities in the world, and spend an evening and a night together. The main roles were played by Julie Delpie and Ethan Hawke.

For the film "Before the Dawn" Linklater was awarded the "Silver Bear", which he was awarded at the Berlin Film Festival.

In 2004, the second part of the trilogy "Before Sunset" was released, in which the same characters met in nine years. And finally in the third film, "Before Midnight", filmed in 2013, the couple already have two children.

The director was in constant creative search, and in 1998 he decided to create a film in the genre of the classic western with a bank robbery. "Brothers Newton" - the so-called film project, which tells about four young people who decided to improve their affairs. Young people began methodically plundering financial institutions in America and Canada. The roles were performed by Ethan Hawke, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew McConaughey and Vincent De Onofrio.

New methods

The next two films were taken by Richard Linklater in 2001. It was "Lenta" and "Awakening of Life" - films of different genre. In addition, in the latter, the director applied new methods of rotoscoping, which give a noble hue to each footage shot. The same technique Linklether used in the production of the film "Confusion" in 2006 with Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder.

In 2003, Richard Linklater, whose films attracted more and more viewers, made the comedy "School of Rock". Starring are Jack Black and Joan Cusack.

In 2006, the director was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director's work in the film Before the Sunset. And in the same year he released the picture "The Nation of Fast Food", a screen version of the publicistic novel by Eric Schlosser about the dangers of fast food in the US. The film was nominated for the "Golden Palm Tree" award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Currently, director Richard Linklater, whose filmography includes more than twenty films of a different genre, is working on a script for his next film project.
