Refractory slab. Features, types, application

To ensure the thermal insulation of furnaces and fireplaces, refractory plates are used. They keep heat, preventing its losses.

The concept of refractory plates

Refractory plate serves to protect the room from the effects of high temperatures when heating furnaces, fireplaces. The principle of its operation is associated with multilayeredness.

In most cases, the plates are used simultaneously with a stainless steel screen. On the surface of the wall with a special mastic glued fireproof plate. In some cases, an air pocket with a thickness of up to 3 cm is left between the wall and the plate. A stainless steel screen is installed by the outer layer adjacent to the oven.

Fire-retardant materials

The refractory plate can be made of various materials. It can be as well-known to all and tested for years, options, and made with innovative innovations. Among the variety of materials can be identified as follows:

  • Asbestos is one of the most common materials. It remains strong when heated to a temperature of 500 degrees. Fireproof plates for fireplaces and furnaces, sheets for protection from ignition of walls, ceilings and separate items are made of it.
  • Vermiculite is a neutral insulator. Popular with buyers material. Characterized by high rates of fire resistance and excellent thermal protection properties. Therefore, it can be used to protect against direct fire or as a spark arrester.
  • SuperSil is an innovative material. It is made of silica. A layer of material 6 mm thick can withstand temperatures over thousands of degrees. It is believed that such an indicator is due to the fact that for the first time this material was developed for the military. Today it is used for thermal insulation of stoves and fireplaces of all kinds.

Types of plates

Thermal insulation materials are produced in the form of plates of different sizes. The following fireproof plates for furnaces and fireplaces became widespread:

  • Fibrocement slabs consisting of synthetic fiber without the use of asbestos fibers.
  • Asbestos plates (cardboard), produced from asbestos. Withstands mechanical influences, ingestion of alkalis and a temperature of 500 degrees.
  • Basalt plates are used to protect from temperatures over 900 degrees. Environmentally safe.
  • Mineralite slabs are universal in their application. Do not burn, are not exposed to moisture, bacteria, mold, shockproof. In addition, they are a good soundproofing device.
  • Glass-magnesium plates, consisting of fiberglass.

  • Decorative plates of vermiculite are characterized by applying a texture on the surface of the sheet.

Refractory slab "Flamma"

Speaking about materials for fire protection, it is necessary to mention fireproof plates "Flamma" separately. This kind of material is produced strictly according to the Finnish technology.

Refractory slab "Flamma" has the following advantages:

  • Strength.
  • Fire resistance. Refers to the upper class of NG.
  • Heat resistance. Withstand temperatures of up to 150 degrees.
  • Good sound insulation characteristics.
  • Moisture resistance. Does not change its characteristics under the influence of moisture.
  • You can wash and rinse. When using chemicals, it is recommended that the surface of the board be treated with siloxane or another impregnation for concrete.
  • Resistant to alkaline and neutral solutions, organic substances. But it undergoes destruction upon interaction with acidic substances.
  • Resistant to the appearance of mold and fungi.
  • Does not rot.
  • Easy to install.

Plates "Flamma" made of cement with addition of mica, limestone and fibers of cellulose are produced. The material does not emit dangerous or harmful substances, it is safe for people and ecology.

Have a gray-beige color with interspersed. The surface is smooth. The edges are even, not beveled. The thickness of the plate is 9 and 12 mm. They are mounted to the back.

Refractory plates protect the room from fire and accidents. Therefore, when building stoves or fireplaces, always consult with a specialist. It will help you choose the right thermal insulation option. In cases where the heating elements are located too close to the wall, the use of refractory materials is mandatory. Therefore, it is recommended to study normative documents on this issue at the planning stage.
