Primer the walls before the putty. How to choose a primer?

Repair is a troublesome and expensive business. I want to make high-quality and inexpensive. But is it so? Saving is good, but repairs are not done for one year. Therefore, the sequence of work must be adhered to.

Priming the walls in front of the putty - although imperceptible at first glance, but very important. Not having executed it, you risk to regret about the economy in a month. In addition, the priming of the walls in front of the putty will help to save on the replacement of facing materials.

Primer application

The best way for a long time to keep the walls and ceiling decoration materials is to use special primers to increase adhesion. If the surface is not primed before the putty, the plaster or tile adhesive applied to it will eventually peel off. Also some types of primers are antiseptic and prevent the occurrence of mold.

To prevent trouble (cracks, deposition of layers of putty and wallpaper sagging), which often occur after filling of unprocessed surfaces, priming of walls before putty will help. Photos help to understand the features of the primer and the nuances of their application.

How to choose a wall primer

The priming of the walls before the putty begins with the selection of a suitable mixture. First of all, one should pay attention to the degree of porosity of the surface. Brick, concrete and other materials have a different percentage of moisture absorption. It is this factor that affects the strength of the adhesion of the finishing materials to the wall surface.

For dense, low-porosity substrates, a primer with a high adhesive property is suitable. If the surface is loose, very porous, it is better to apply soil with a deep penetration. Universal means are used for the basis of medium porosity.

Most primers are designed for a certain type of substrate (manufacturers indicate them on the packaging) for maximum effect.

Descriptions of types of primers

Primers are many kinds, with different properties and for different surfaces.

Acrylic primer (universal) - suitable for most surfaces. The drying time directly depends on the humidity of the room, does not exceed 4 hours. The acrylic solution is ideally suited for priming walls before putty.

Alkyd - used only for wooden surfaces. It is forbidden to use together with putty.

Glyftalovaya primer - is intended for finishing wood and metals. Strongly toxic, it is recommended to work only in ventilated areas in respirators.

Perchlorovinyl solution is the most suitable for use on brick and concrete surfaces after puttying. It is intended only for outdoor works.

Phenolic primer, like glyptal, is used on wooden and metal surfaces where the absorption depth is not important. It is not recommended to use walls before puttying.

Polystyrene - is used for wood and priming of plastered, putty surfaces. Has a very toxic composition.

Polyvinyl acetate - for priming surfaces for painting with polyvinyl acetate paint. The time of complete drying of the primer is about 40 minutes.

Price categories

By the ratio of the price / quality of the primer can be divided into four main groups:

  • The cheapest. Applied when price is the predominant factor, and quality is not particularly important. This applies to low-budget construction projects, finishing public non-residential buildings.
  • Average price. Domestic manufacturers, which produce primers on the basis of imported components.
  • The price is above average. Putties and primers of famous foreign manufacturers (widely represented in Russia).
  • High price. Elite foreign manufacturers that use additional special additives. Such material is manufactured and sold under the order. The price can be more than the cost of mixtures of the third group at least several times.

Quality in most cases is directly related to the price of the primer. But there are exceptions. There are options for a good primer at a reasonable price, they are enough to make a high-quality priming of the walls before the putty. Knauf - a line of primers that perfectly strengthen the base, quickly dry out. In addition, they are absolutely non-toxic - they are made of ecological components.

Preparation for the priming process

Preparation for priming is no less important than the process of applying the mixture.

Before starting work, you need to take care of purchasing all the necessary tools and materials. The application tool may be a roller, brush or spray. Also, when using the roller, a special container is required for easy operation. The amount of the primer is calculated based on the total area at which the priming of the walls will be made before the putty. Consumption - about one liter for 3-5 square meters. M (depending on the type of primer).

After that we cover the floor covering (if we do a partial repair). A polyethylene film is suitable. Further we prepare walls, we remove possible fixing elements, we close potholes and cracks. The priming of the walls before the putty under the wallpaper requires careful removal of the remains of the old wallpaper to prevent detachment of the putty.

Description of the work process

Clean the prepared walls thoroughly with a wet sponge to remove dust. Then pour the primer into the prepared container and apply it to the wall. It is more convenient to apply the material to the wall with a roller than with a brush: the primer mixture is laid flat, and the work progresses faster.

Roller movements are made first from top to bottom, then from left to right. Difficult places that do not reach the roller, smear with a brush.

After the completion of the work, we wait for the primer to dry. Depending on its type, type of walls and humidity, this process can last from 3 to 15 hours. After the entire drying of the wall, you can proceed to the putty.
