Prepositions in Russian: Classification and Examples

Prepositions in Russian are the official part of speech. As a rule, they face nouns and clarify the meaning of what has been said. It is very important to be able to distinguish prepositions from adverbs and nouns, since such mistakes are very often encountered in a single state examination.

Prepositions in Russian: classification

Prepositions have their own complex classification, which is simply necessary to know. So, the classification is not even one. The simplest is the division according to origin: the prepositions of the Russian language are derivatives (in continuation, according to, thanks to) and non-productive (because of, on, in). Derived prepositions are often confused with nouns. Also do not forget that at the end of the preposition, the letter -E- is written: within an hour, BUT in the course of a month, BUT in the continuation of the story. This part of prepositions is very complex and, as a rule, causes the greatest difficulties for students. All prepositions in the Russian language can be divided and one more feature: value. It is worth noting that this service part of the speech helps to see the dependence of words in a sentence or in a phrase. So, prepositions in Russian can be spatial, that is, point to a place (for example, under a tree, near a road, around a table, under a chair). Also, prepositions are temporary, that is, they indicate a time interval (for example, in half an hour, during the last month, until evening, done in a year, by five o'clock).

The next item of classification is causal pretexts, which, therefore, determine or indicate the cause (for example, due to events, due to illness, due to rain, tremble from the wind). The fourth subdivision can be called prepositions, indicating the goal, that is, the target. Traditionally, they include pretexts for, for, for (for example, for the sake of the brother, for the motherland, for the benefit of the Fatherland, to stop for a rest). The penultimate point can be called the pretexts of the mode of action, they, like adverbs of the same name, indicate and designate the image and a kind of emotional color of the action: for example, to work with joy, to speak without errors. And the last item of the classification is additional pretexts. They are pointers to the object to which an action is directed. For example, forget about the promise, talk about the holiday, pass the exam on geography. It is worth noting that the same preposition may appear in different meanings, since everything depends on the context of the events taking place. Do not forget that prepositions are not members of the proposal, but are included in their composition. For example, the phrase "before dinner" in the sentence "Before dinner, I read the book" will be a circumstance (noun + preposition).

Prepositions in Russian play a very important role. They express the dependence, determine the time, show the goal and indicate the causes of the events. Knowing the classification of prepositions and the rules for their writing is very important to every person, as gross errors can distort the meaning of the whole phrase.
