Preparation of grapes for winter in the Urals: what to do to prevent the vine from becoming frozen

Strange as it may seem, grapes from the Urals have been extremely popular in recent years. These wonderful berries, which are grown by their own hands, preserve the warmth of the summer sun and its caress, even when processed into a magnificent home-made wine.

That's just one problem. The fact is that the winters in our lands are much more severe than those that France or even the northern part of Germany can boast of. Therefore, the preparation of grapes for winter in the Urals is an extremely important event, since the entire quality of your harvest depends on the quality of the vine.

So, consider the whole process a little more. In the first days of October, it is necessary to remove all leaves, and after the first frosts, pruning all fruiting bushes.

This is an important part of the training, since you need to completely get rid of the old shoots, which no longer bear fruit. Remember that you need to leave the knots of substitution and fruit arrows. All old, sick and dried sleeves should be ruthlessly removed. In return, you need to leave a young vine coming from the center of the bush.

What else does the preparation of grapes mean for winter in the Urals? Note that pruning is not particularly addictive. So, you need to leave a little more eyes than recommended for this grade. This is worth doing because of the fact that in winter some of them will inevitably die. If in the spring it turns out that you have an oversupply of eyes, then you just delete them.

But the preparation of grapes for winter in the Urals is unthinkable without rolling! To do this, dig a bush to a depth of about 15 cm, after which cleanly remove the rooted roots (surface). After that dry sand is poured into the hole. It is even better to use for this purpose the river, pre-calcined at the stake.

After that you can start watering. It is to them, as the grapes are extremely sensitive to a lack of moisture in the soil. It should be noted that the autumn irrigation should be started immediately after the crop is harvested. As a result, at the beginning of the inflorescence in the soil, an optimal moisture reserve will be accumulated.

Recall that one fruit bearing bush needs at least a dozen buckets of clean water, and it should be added potassium permanganate (manganese). Concentration should be selected such that the liquid acquired a gentle pink color.

Approximately the same way the preparation of grape seedlings is carried out. Keep in mind that if you regularly do such watering before the winter, then the yield of bushes will grow by 1/3.

It is very important to remember that before the cold you need to make a top dressing. On one square meter of the area in front of a bush of grapes it is necessary to put on five kilograms of compost, adding a pair of glasses of ash and a gram of boric acid. If the soil is excessively acidic, it will be superfluous to carry out unscheduled liming.

When the first stable frosts come, the vines are bent to the ground, and then covered with slate sheets (not metallic!). As soon as winter comes into its own (if there is not even snow), they begin the second phase, which involves the preparation of grapes for winter in the Urals.

On the slate, at least 20 cm of dry clean sawdust or peat is placed on top. Above this structure, fir or spruce paws are placed, which will promote the accumulation and retention of snow.

The preparation of cuttings of grapes newly planted in the soil is no different from the procedure described above. Of course, they do not need such abundant watering, but you need to cover them more carefully.
