Potassium iodide. Instructions

Potassium iodide is a preparation containing inorganic iodine. When entering the epithelial cells of the follicle in the thyroid gland, there is an oxidation process. As a result, under the influence of the iodide-peroxidase enzyme, elementary iodine is formed, which is included in the tyrosine molecule. In this case, the tyrosine radicals (iodinated) condense into tyronines. Thus, T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) are formed. The formed complex of thyroglobulin and thyronin is released as a deposited form of the hormone in the thyroid gland into the follicular colloid and remains in this form for several weeks or days. With a lack of iodine, the described process is broken, and potassium iodide compensates for the deficit. In this case, the drug contributes to the restoration of the synthesis of hormones (thyroid).

In the case of a normal iodine content in the environment, the excess of iodides stops the biosynthesis. Thyroid hormones do not leave the thyroglobulin, the sensitivity in the thyroid gland to the thyroid-stimulating hormone of the pituitary gland decreases, which provokes the blocking of its (hormone) secretion.

Potassium iodide (eye drops, tablets, solution for oral administration) is quickly absorbed. There is a wide distribution of the drug in liquid media and all tissues of the body.

Potassium iodide instruction recommends to receive for the treatment and prevention of endemic goiter, to prevent recurrence of goiter on the background of complex therapy with drugs of thyroid hormones.

Dosing of the drug by a doctor is selected individually. In terms of iodine, the daily amount of funds for children is from 50 to 100 μg. Dosage for adults - from 100 to 200 mcg.

Taking the drug can cause swelling of the nasal mucosa, Quincke's edema, hives, shock, eosinophilia. To the side effects of the drug "Potassium iodide" the instruction refers to irritability, tachycardia, diarrhea (in patients after forty years), sleep disorder, increased sweating. In some cases, the use of elevated dosages (more than 300-100 μg) develops hyperthyroidism (especially in elderly patients with diffuse or nodular goiter).

Contraindications to the drug "Potassium iodide" instruction calls hypothyroidism of pronounced and latent flow, toxic adenoma, hypersensitivity to iodine, diffuse or nodular goiter (toxic). The drug is not prescribed for durings herpetiform dermatitis .

Potassium iodide in pregnancy and lactation is allowed for use only in therapeutic doses on the recommendation of a doctor. The active component is able to penetrate the placental barrier. This can provoke the formation of goiter and hypothyroidism in the fetus.

The drug is excreted with the mother's milk. When using dosages exceeding 1 mg, there is a risk of developing a newborn hypothyroidism.

In patients with renal insufficiency against the background of the treatment is likely the development of hyperkalemia.

Hyperkalemia can occur with combined high-dose iodine therapy with potassium-sparing diuretics, hypothyroidism and goiter with lithium preparations. Thiocyanate and perchlorate are able to inhibit the absorption of the thyroid gland by iodine.

The use of the drug may cause allergic reactions. At the same time, some patients marked acne on the skin of the face. When the remedy is removed, the rash passes, but the condition worsens significantly. If such conditions occur when using the drug "Potassium iodide", the instruction recommends that you consult with a specialist. It is probably necessary to adjust the dosage or replace the drug with another.

Iodine preparations are often prescribed during pregnancy as maintenance therapy. However, the application in the period of gestation should be controlled by a specialist.
