Pavlov Yakov Fedotovich - the legendary hero of the Battle of Stalingrad

Six hours is spent in high school to study the Second World War. Unfortunately, beyond the brief familiarity with the main events, facts and battles are portraits of real war heroes, examples of heroism and dedication of ordinary people. For example, such as Pavlov Yakov Fedotovich, whose name is the House of Soldier's Glory in Volgograd (the former Stalingrad).

"Not one step back!"

In July 1942, the fascists came to the Volga, where after the conquest of Stalingrad they planned to rush to the Caucasus. Two weeks in the plans of the Fuhrer was assigned to the capture of the city, which had a serious strategic significance in the course of military operations. From Stalin came the order: to defend Stalingrad at any cost. In history, he is known under the slogan: "Not a step back!".

At that time, Yakov Fedotovich Pavlov, whose photo is presented in the article, served in the rank of sergeant in the division of AI Rodimtsev, who arrived in the citadel on the Volga before the heroic defense of the city. Having settled in Kamyshin, the military conducted exercises, understanding the importance of the upcoming battles. Unable to immediately break into the city, the fascists began to fire him. Only the day of August 23, they dropped so many bombs on Stalingrad that no more buildings remained in it, and the burning oil from railroad tanks poured into the Volga stream. The look of the defenders was a terrible sight - a burning river, a fire-covered avalanche covering the coast.

Street fighting

On September thirteenth, 1942, the Germans broke into the city. General Rodimtsev miraculously managed to stop the onslaught of the enemy a hundred meters from the shore. The battle was fought for every street and building on the square on the 9th of January (now the area of Defense). Here, any solid building turned into a stronghold, capable of holding a circular defense.

It was the end of September. One of the four-story brick buildings, facing the square, had a serious tactical advantage: it opened an excellent view of the part of the city occupied by the fascists and the ways of their possible breakthrough to the bank of the Volga. The commander of the department, Pavlov Yakov Fedotovich, received from his company commander the task of scouting the situation in the indicated house at the address: Penza, 31. With three fighters he managed to force out the Germans from the captured building and keep him for two days. In the basement, they found local residents sheltering from the fire. Among them was the architect of the house with his pregnant wife, who died during the shelling.

On the third day, reinforcements arrived in the force of 24 people: a group of armored vehicles and submachine gunners, led by senior lieutenant IF Afanasyev. Garrison managed to turn the object into an impregnable fortress for the fascists. It was for these heroic events that Sergeant Pavlov Yakov Fedotovich became known to the world community.

The feat of the defenders

The Battle of Stalingrad lasted 200 days and nights, 58 of which the defenders of the house, known in history under the name of Pavlov's House, fought steadfastly. The soldiers lasted until the Red Army moved on the offensive on 11/19/1942, having lost only three of its comrades: Private ITS Svirin, Sergeant I. Ya. Hayta and Lieutenant A. Chernyshenko. On the personal map of General Paulus the object was marked as a fortress, which is protected by a whole battalion.

In fact, 24 people, representatives of 9 nationalities, covered their names with glory, striking the enemy with their courage and heroism. The garrison mined the approaches to the house, the breakthrough of the trench, through which communication was maintained with the command. It was supplied with provisions and ammunition, a field telephone cable was passed and the wounded evacuated. Fascists stormed the building several times a day, but failed to break above the ground floor.

Each fighter cost a whole platoon, firing through the embrasures, pierced in the brick walls. The third floor was equipped with a 24-hour observation post, which tracks any movements of the enemy and opens a squall machine-gun fire as it approaches.

A handful of Soviet soldiers became a symbol of resistance to the enemy who conquered all of Europe. Pavlov Yakov Fedotovich, who fought heroically in the battles for the liberation of Stalingrad, November 25 was wounded in the leg. He was sent to a hospital. Subsequently, together with the 3rd Ukrainian and 2nd Byelorussian fronts, he will travel from Stalingrad to Elba, receiving the Star of Hero of the USSR in June 1945.
