Peter and Fevronia: the legend

The history of Peter and Fevronia happened in the 12-13th century in the city of Murom. In the annals it is told that Fevronia was from the common folk, her father was a dagger (he extracted honey of wild bees in hollows of trees). Peter belonged to a princely family. Having vanquished the fiery serpent, Peter fell ill: his whole body was covered with scabs, because he had become obese with the blood of a serpent. No one could help him, the healers were powerless. But he became aware that he could be cured by a simple girl Fevronia, who lives in the village of Laskovo, located in the Ryazan land.

Fevronia was a deeply religious girl, gifted with foresight. She agreed to help, but she could cure the disease only if Peter took her as his wife. He promised, but when he was healed, he decided to buy off expensive gifts from the commoner, she did not accept them, and the young man fell ill again. Returning for help the second time, he again received it and this time married. Having received the throne of Prince in Murom, a family couple rules with good deeds, but boyar wives did not like that they were ruled by a commoner, and they asked Peter to send his wife or go away with her.

The family couple left, and in Murom riots began, blood was spilled, the boyars could not choose a new ruler and sent a messenger to Peter and Fevronia asking to return to the principality, which they did without showing any resentment. The Murom rulers had three children, they lived a long life, took their tonsure in old age, and retired to monasteries. Their only desire was to die in one day and be buried in one coffin, which they had already prepared: a stone house, divided by a thin partition. When the hour came, it happened. By tradition, monks of different sex are not buryed together. Three times they were striving to be divided before burial, and all three times miraculously they were together, then the people decided that God so pleased.

Buried were the couple in the cathedral of the Murom church, which was raised in gratitude for the military victory by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. In the Soviet period, the relics of saints were exhibited in the museum, and since 1992 are buried in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Murom. The feast day of the holy couple is celebrated on June 25. Monument of Fevronia and Peter is established in many cities as a reminder of the value and inviolability of family and love.
