Modern cinema art. What is a thriller?

What is a thriller? In literal translation from English, the word "thriller" means "excitement, emotional experience". The genre of "thriller" includes works of literature and motion pictures that can cause certain emotions. Thriller films are films with a criminal plot, insurgents, horrors, adventures, and mysticism. These are works with a vivid psychological overtones that cause anxiety, fear, tension, excitement. Plots of these films pose an atmosphere, create an emotional tension associated with the expectation of further development of the plot. It is believed that filmmaking should evoke emotions. If we start from this, then a quality thriller that respects all the laws of the genre is a "good movie".

What is a thriller, it's easy to explain on detective films. It is the films of this genre that basically make up this direction. The twist of the plot, the vague concepts of good and evil, the unknown, the search for an answer to the age-old question "Who is right and who is to blame?" - that is what is the main component of these genres. The viewer constantly raises the question, what next? A professional director will leave this question to the very end, not allowing history to collapse at the very beginning. However, unlike the detectives, in which the plot goes to the denouement, here everything is the opposite - with every next minute the viewer, along with the heroes, plunges deeper and deeper, after the paused stop. One of the subgenres of a detective thriller can be attributed to gangster movies. Banditry, murders, bloodsheds, betrayals - these are all elements of this genre. Often the viewer becomes not just an accomplice in the events taking place in the picture. Internal struggle in the definition of a positive hero causes a storm of emotions, because often the nobility of the negative hero is much closer to the frailty and weakness of the positive.

Another genre is horror. Thrillers of this direction are the most frightening. Often the protagonist is not at all. In such films Death rules the ball. The only goal pursued by the participants of the events is to survive. But often the senselessness, illogicality of their actions provokes the opposite result. This also strains the viewer, who is sure that if he gets into a similar situation, he will act quite differently. The spectator subconsciously emerges from the role of an ordinary contemplator and emotionally becomes a participant in what is happening on the screen.

The audience learned about what a thriller is for the first time thanks to the works of Alfred Hitchcock. He skillfully pumped up the situation in his films, using for this purpose all possible means for the filmmaker. An important role in such films is played by music and sharp sounds, oppressive silence. Hitchcock superbly operated on these things, and his films are uniquely a classic of the genre.

During the Second World War and during the peak of the Cold War, spy movies became the most popular. One of the subgenres of this trend is a political thriller.

What is a thriller in the modern world? Despite the fact that some genre directions are not so interesting at the present time, detective films, political thrillers, horrors, films about apocalyptic catastrophes and their consequences, fantastic films telling about the development of scientific theories and many others remain popular. Genres. Thriller is a truly bottomless well of ideas.
