Michael Sullivan: books and biography

Sometimes the future writer of world renown is separated only by the reluctance of publishers to bet on a new author. Michael Sullivan could quite fill up a crowd of talented, but, alas, unknown authors, if not for one circumstance - he decided to publish his works himself. Soon they became bestsellers, and in the world of fantasy a new name appeared.

about the author

Michael J. Sullivan was born on September 17, 1961 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I started writing from the age of 10 after I found a typewriter in the basement of my house. The first lines he typed: "it was a dark and stormy night." It seems that even then Michael Sullivan decided on the whole life story - writing books became his favorite thing.

It can not be said that a novice writer took it as a hobby. He spent a lot of time studying the work of such masters as Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck, and honed his own style. However, having written 13 novels over 10 years, Michael never received recognition.

After that, he did two things at once - quit smoking and stopped writing. And I promised myself that it was forever.

Michael Sullivan worked as an illustrator, and in 1996 he organized his own small business - an advertising agency. In 2005, he closed the case and devoted all his free time to writing books, breaking his word. He did this in order to instill a love for reading his thirteen-year-old daughter, suffering from dyslexia.

The author was already well over forty, he did not look for popularity and did not plan to give his work to the press. From this step he was dissuaded by his wife after reading the third book of the series "Revelations of Rieria". Acting as his business partner, the writer's wife organized the printing of the first two novels in small print, then they were recognized in the electronic version (2008). Only after that, Michael Sullivan became interesting to publishers, not only in the USA (2010), but throughout the world. Today his works are translated into 14 languages, including Russian.

The author is married, he has three children.

Michael Sullivan: Books

The author wrote six works of the cycle "Revelations of Riyriya", which were published first in parts, and then were published three-volume. There is also a parallel series "The Chronicles of Rieria". They can be read simultaneously.

Michael Sullivan recommends reading his books not according to the time of events in the works, but as they were published:

  1. "The Abduction of Swords." This part includes "Conspiracy against the Crown" and "Awempartha".
  2. "The rise of the empire." These include "The Rise of Nifron" and "Emerald Storm".
  3. "Heir to Novron." It consists of books called "The Feast of Winter" and "Pertseplikis" (or "Perseplikvis" and "Winter" - there are different versions).
  4. "The Crown Tower."
  5. "Rose and thorn."
  6. "The Death of Dulgat."

Without a series: "Hollow World".

Reviews

What books does Michael Sullivan write? "Abduction of swords" - this is the work by which you can evaluate all the creativity of the author and understand whether to read it or not. In the book we are talking about a pair of talented thieves - Roise and Adrian, who are accompanied by extraordinary luck in their craft. But one negligence - and now, they are already bogged down in royal intrigues, and the fate of the country depends on their actions.

In the US, Michael Sullivan is compared to George Martin, but without explicit bed scenes, as well as with authors of classical fantasy, for example, with John R. R. Tolkien. But Sullivan not so epic books, and elves, gnomes and other fairy-tale races are introduced only as scenery - if they were replaced by people, the book would not change at all.

And in our country draw an analogy with Aleksey Pekhov and his "Chronicles of Siala". Heroes and the idea are similar, but our compatriot is ahead of Sullivan according to readers' estimates.

In general, the works of this author can be called successful, we can say - on the four with a plus. What was not enough for the ideal? Dynamics, more detailing the details of the world, or maybe just played a personal taste predilections.

You can read Michael Sullivan's books to everyone who loves fantasy with a detective story - it's necessary.
