"Ivanhoe": a summary

This novel is devoted to the distant past. Therefore, the short content of "Ivanhoe" should start with a description of the historical circumstances in which the heroes of the novel fall. England is going through a difficult time. King Richard the First is in captivity. At this time, his brother, Prince John, intends to seize the throne.

Famous Saxon Cedric of Rotherwood wants to overthrow the Norman rule and revive the power of his people. In his opinion, the chapter of the future liberation movement should become Atelston of Koningsburg. Cedric decides to marry him to Lady Rowena, her ward, who is the last representative of the kind of King Alfred. But Lady Rowena is attached to Cedric's son, Ivanhoe. The summary describes that, because of this, an angry Cedric expels his son from the house and deprives him of his inheritance.

The beginning of the novel begins with the fact that Ivanhoe secretly in the guise of a pilgrim returns from the crusade. Soon, he is followed by a detachment of Brian de Boisguilbert, the commander of the Templars, heading for the knight tournament. This tournament takes place in the presence of Prince John. Brian de Boisguillebert confidently defeats many knights. But suddenly a new knight appears in the arena, the shield of which is adorned with the motto "Deprived of Legacy." He summons the Templar to a duel and triumphs. As a winner, he chooses the queen of love and beauty, which becomes Rowena. On the second day, the knight "Deprived of the Legacy" wins with the help of the mysterious Black Knight. As a reward, Rowena must place an honorary crown on the head of the first knight . When a helmet is removed from him, he falls, bleeding. In an unfamiliar knight, everyone recognizes Ivanhoe. The summary tells that Prince John perceives this as a sign that Richard the First has been released. Therefore, he begins to seek supporters, promising them great rewards. For example, Maurice de Bracy, he offers to his wife a rich and noble bride Lady Rowena, who named the knight decides to kidnap.

Soon a detachment of robbers, headed by Boisguillebert and de Bracy, is attacked by Cedric and his companions (among them was Ivanhoe, wounded). The captives are taken to a fortified castle, where de Bracy tries to win the favor of Lady Rowena, but she responds with a decided refusal. At this time, the castle is besieged by the Black Knight, who once helped Ivanhoe. The summary describes how he captivates de Bracy and saves Ivanhoe. But at the siege of the castle Athelstan, the fiancé of Lady Rovena, perishes.

At the end of Ivanhoe's novel (whose brief content misses many details) readers will learn that the Black Knight is none other than King Richard the First. Having occupied a proper place on the throne, he forgives Prince John. Cedric, in turn, agrees to the wedding of Ivanhoe and Lady Rowena.
