Ismena: growing and care in the room

Gimenokallis (ismena) is a perennial onion plant of white color with large flowers. They are united in inflorescences, having the form of umbrellas and issuing a pleasant smell. Stamens are long, half-jointed and form a crown similar to a daffodil. The upper part of the stamens, in which the pollen is formed, has a bright dark orange color.

The plant hymenocallis has several more names. Who is fond of breeding flowers, he knows it as a pancratium, and from Holland it is supplied to us under the name of ismena. How to grow this amazing flower, described in the article.

The uniqueness of this extraordinary plant is that the opening of the ripened buds occurs with the accuracy of a second at the same time and is complemented by the pleasant fragrance of the unfolded flower. This unusual property of change makes it even more attractive and mysterious.

The difference of the ismena from representatives of the genus Hymenocallis

  1. The plants have a different direction and shape of flowers. At the change they are slightly inclined and presented in the form of luxurious bells. In the hymenocallus, the flower resembles a convolvulus, wide open and looking upwards with petals.
  2. In the flowers of the plant, inside the carved corona, formed from the fused bases of the stamens, green stripes are seen, in contrast to the hymenocallis.
  3. The ismena has a false stem, which is formed due to the death of the leaves, but the hymenocallis does not.

Ismena: how to grow at home

The flower will please you all year round with simple manipulations:

  • Lighting. The plant prefers bright light. Direct sunlight is contraindicated, although it grows on the southern windows. In summer, you can carry the change to the garden until the fall. In winter bulbs are kept at a temperature of 10 degrees in a dry place.
  • A moderate watering is necessary. With a lack of moisture, the leaves lose their elasticity and lie down. Excess moisture also adversely affects the indoor plant. At yellowing of the bottom leaves it is necessary to reduce watering.
  • Top dressing. It is carried out every three weeks, beginning with the appearance of young leaves and ending at the end of flowering. Use liquid mineral fertilizers for indoor plants, apply according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Plant transplantation is carried out once in 3-4 years in a period of rest. After this procedure, the leaves can be attached, so the changes are shaded for several days. The soil composition must include land containing one part of humus, peat, sand, leaves and two parts of clayey sod soil.
  • Reproduction of a change that grows from seeds or a part of a cut bulb can also occur from children, but they are rarely formed.
  • Air humidity. Dry air in the room can damage the plant, so you need to do it spraying, excluding the rest period.

Diseases

Ismena, the cultivation and care of which requires compliance with certain rules, is quite unpretentious in the content. Diseases of plants mainly arise due to improper care: high temperature and humidity.

Anthracnose can be detected by the appearance of black inclusions and brown streaks on the tips of the leaves. To recover the plant requires:

  • Tear off diseased leaves;
  • Reduce the amount of irrigation;
  • Carry out treatment with a fungicidal agent;
  • Ventilate the apartment.

Staganospore is shown by red spots on the bulb, and then they go over to the leaves. At the beginning of the disease, the treatment of the bulb will be assisted by a solution of foundation (dissolve 2 g in a liter of water). At the advanced stage of the disease should be treated with the following mixture: in 300 g of water add 100 g of chalk, 5 g of copper sulfate, 10 g of sticker, mix everything until the density of sour cream and process the bulb, leaves and peduncles.

Gray rot is one of the most common diseases. It affects the bulb of the plant. If a rot is found, it is removed with a sharp knife, and the place of the cut is powdered with crushed charcoal. In case of severe damage, the bulb is discarded. The disease occurs with abundant watering and low temperature.

Pests

In addition to the aforementioned diseases, the scabbard and mealybug can harm the change. From these parasites can get rid of: wash them with a soap solution, treat with infusion of garlic or alcohol tincture of calendula.

Ismena: growing and care in the open ground

Bulbs intended for planting in the garden are germinated to accelerate the flowering of the plant. To do this, take a small container and the bulb to half covered with peat or sawdust, you need to ensure that there is no stagnation of water. The temperature in the room should not exceed 15 degrees.

Sprouted bulbs are planted in fertile land on a sunny spot in the first days of May, deepening them by 5 cm. It is necessary to protect the planting from frost. Leaflets will appear in early June. When caring for a test, correct watering is necessary: with excess water it will rot, and if there is a deficit, it will not bloom. Ten centimeters from the plant make small grooves, where they pour water.

Do not recommend to feed plants with organic fertilizers, they can die. And complex fertilizers make fertilizing up to 4 times a season.

Growing in a container

Bulbs are changeable, growing and leaving (the photo is shown below) which can be carried out, both in the open ground and in containers, germinate quickly enough. The second method gives better results. Begin to prepare the containers in mid-March. Do in them drainage and fill with fertile loose earth. Before planting bulbs, the soil is moistened. When planting the neck of the bulb should protrude slightly above the soil.

Boxes are placed in a warm and preferably lit place. Periodically they are watered. A month later, a flower spike will appear, and rosettes of leaves will form. In order for plants to bloom in the summer as long as possible, bulbs are recommended to be planted at different times. Twice a month the plants should be fed with a complex liquid fertilizer.

In August, the watering of plants is reduced, with the onset of cold weather, they should be transferred to a room where the air temperature is not higher than 15 degrees.

Winter storage bulbs

Ismena, whose cultivation and care is continued until late autumn, beautifies the garden with greenery. Before the onset of cold weather, you need to dig up the bulbs. They, together with leaves and children, are dried and placed in a cool room. The dried leaves are separated, all bulbs are washed, dried and stored in a dry pantry in plastic mesh boxes at room temperature.

They are well stored with roots and do not dry out. During the winter period, you should check the contents of the boxes several times. When signs of awakening appear, they should be planted in the ground and cared for as an indoor plant.

How does it multiply?

The Caribbean has a round underground bulb, narrow-lanceolate or strap-like leaves that narrow to the ground. From 6 to 12 large white flowers are connected to an umbellate inflorescence. Blooms in the winter.

The coastal species has leafy green leaves. Fragrant white flowers are collected in the inflorescence umbrella, flower straight, smooth and green. In the flower there are six narrow curving petals, in the middle of which there is a white bowl with thin, long stamens, painted white, with yellow anthers.

The coastal subspecies multicolored fragrant with a pleasant aroma, which produces white flowers, located on a sturdy straight peduncle. The shape of the leaves is the same as in the previous species, and along the edges there are wide bands of a whitish-gray hue.

Early is a popular variation of the izmena, cultivation and care of which is carried out at home. This variety has short leaf plates of dark green color with a glossy surface of belt-like shape. The plant will blossom in April and will please flowers with white large petals until July.

Narcissus species is an evergreen plant with dark green leaves, which have xiphoid contours. The flowers are very large in color. Some subspecies petals are cast in white and purple hue. Blossoms from July to October.

Beautiful has snow-white flowers and a leaf plate of lanceolate-elliptical shape.

Cordyfalia from all the above varieties is significantly different. It has pale, narrow, dangling flowers, there is no crown. Leaves with long petioles are elongated, heart-shaped.

Tubiflora is very similar to the previous species. It differs only in the elongated-oval shape of the leaves.
