Handle connection

The handle can simply be attached to the shank or fastened to it with rivets. The first option looks more attractive. The shank of the knife is made in the form of a narrow rod. Part of it can go beyond the hilt. On the protruding part, thread the thread, using a nut, the handle is attached to the shank, pressing it against the stop. With this method of attachment, the base can be made from a set of individual rings. The closing nut is often called the knob, and is usually given an attractive appearance. For a short shank, the handle is simply inserted and glued.

Handle: material

The material for making the handle must be strong, comfortable to the touch, do not cool your hand, do not become soaked in blood and do not freeze to your fingers from the cold. The basic requirements also include light weight, ease of handling and availability of purchase. It's probably not advisable to get exotic materials for a hunting knife.

The best raw material for making the handle is a tree. Billets are made from dense varieties. Very good details are obtained from maple, ash and apple. Coniferous trees do not apply. Birches take so-called kapy, that is, outgrowths on the trunk. A hole is made in the workpiece for attachment to the shank. If it is planned that it will go beyond the hilt, then the hole is made through. Its diameter should allow the shank to enter the inside of the handle so as not to split it.

Advantage bark

The ideal material for the handle is birch bark. To make the product softer, the raw material is heat treated in hot water for 2 hours. You can say it is simply boiled in a large pot of water, then thoroughly dried. The finished sheet of birch bark is cut into small rectangular plates. The size of the parts should be slightly larger than the size of the future hilt. Then the plates are put one by one on the shank of the knife.

The holes in the rectangles must be made directly before their attachment, since the transverse dimensions of the shank do not remain constant. The collected birch bark is compressed with a nut, which is wound on the thread at the end of the shank. If necessary, the plates are added until the entire birch bark is compressed into a single dense briquette, and under the nut there will remain several turns of thread. With the help of a sharp knife and a file of a handle the necessary form is given. In the final version, the handle is ground with a fine sandpaper. Varnishes and paints are not needed. The limiter does not allow the hand to shift to the blade. It is attached to the handle. The restrictor is set only as single. The cross is used in combat weapons. Basic knife-making operations

  1. A general drawing of the knife with the handle and a separate blade design with a shank are made.

  3. Emery with a large grain grind the metal along the contour and get the workpiece. To the metal structure is not violated due to overheating, it is lowered into a container with water for cooling.
  4. The shank is prepared to fit the handle. If it extends beyond its limits, a thread is cut at the end under the nut. If you plan to fasten the rivets, then drill holes.
  5. Emery with fine granularity evenly bring out the slopes from the blunt part of the blade to the sharp one. The billet is regularly cooled in water to prevent overheating.
  6. The surface of the blade is treated with a grinding wheel, and then polished. To do this, you can use a felt disk and a special paste.
  7. From a thick brass plate make a bushing and put it on the shank. The handle will rest on it. A sleeve can be made together with a stop. For better fixation, it is soldered to the blade.
  8. Make a handle and attach it to the shank or fastened with rivets. Hunting knives with their own hands can be done without it. Just wrap the workpiece with a cord or twine.
