From the history of the breed

Similar to the current setters, animals were first described in the sources, which are attributed to 1776. Scotch ancestors are Irish and English setters, bloodhounds, collies, perhaps Labradors and Spaniels.

The castle of the Duke became the main "base" of breeding the Scottish Setter breed . Gordon-setter - a dog that has gone a long way of breeding development. Active work on the formation and improvement of the breed began in the early XIX century. Thanks to the efforts of the famous dog breeder - the Duke of Richmond, one of the owners of the Gordon castle - the very first standard of this breed appeared in 1860. Nevertheless, more often these dogs are called gordon setters.

At the first exhibition of hunting dogs, held in England in 1859 in the city of Newcastle, the victory was won by Gordon Setter D. Jobling. The first field competitions were held in Bedford in 1865. Gordons took three prizes.

In 1892 the Scottish Setter Gordon, a hunting breed of dogs, is officially recognized by the American club of animal lovers. They began to breed in Scandinavian countries, Russia, France. At the beginning of the last century, the Gordons were again renamed the Scottish Setter.

In 1924, the Scottish Setter Gordon (a hunting breed of dogs) was recognized by the English Kennel Club. The ICF recognized these wonderful animals as the Gordon Setter. More than sixty years (1988) the breed standard was seriously revised. It is in this edition, with minor changes, it exists today.

Color

The standard allows coal-black with a bluish shimmer and a bright nut or mahogany tan. The location of the taiga and its manifestations are strictly regulated, any deviation is considered to be a marriage.
