How to store carrots in urban conditions

A rare inhabitant of a modern city has its own garage, and even more so a cellar in which it would be possible to store vegetables in some more or less decent quantity. Is it possible and, if so, how to store carrots or other root vegetables at home? Even if you have the financial means to purchase a significant amount of vegetables at low prices, you will sooner or later "rest against" the issue of storing these vegetables. The same situation for the truckers, growing a large crop, say carrots, keep it in the city will be very difficult if you do not know how to store carrots in the apartment.

The choice of method of storage depends on the volume of root vegetables that you have available. If you bought several kilograms, the best option would be packing in polyethylene and storage on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. But, unfortunately, not every refrigerator will get a couple of bags of carrots from the garden. Theoretically, you can help glazed balcony, unless of course you are sure that in winter the temperature on it will not drop below zero. If there is no such certainty, then it is necessary to use old, proven methods.

Storage in clay

Claying is the most common and fairly reliable way of storing vegetables for a long time. Since clay prevents the development of microbes and well resists decay, this method has been popular since ancient times. In the distant past, when there were no refrigerators, so they saved not only vegetables but also meat.

How to store carrots in winter using clay? To bookmark the vegetable for the winter period, this method should be stocked with large plastic bags and clay. Clay is bred with water to the state of sour cream, and we dunk into it completely every carrot, then spread the roots covered with this solution in the sun and wait for the formation of a dry clay crust.

Now that you have a lot of clay carrots and plastic bags, you just have to combine these two assets, fill the carrots in bags and put them in a dark place, do not seal the bags, the air access to the carrots should be free.

Onion husks and horseradish

Horseradish and onion husks will answer the question - how to store carrots, if there is no clay at hand. You will need a wooden box of medium size, which can easily fit ten kilograms of carrots. Root the roots in layers, for every 20 carrots, a rhizome of horseradish should be added. It should be no shorter than 30 centimeters. Since horseradish is known for its bactericidal properties, and is also a good preservative, thanks to the proximity with it, carrots will persist for a long time. Instead of horseradish, you can use almost the same success of onion husk, it will need to sprinkle abundantly every row of carrots when laying.

When everything is ready, remove the boxes of carrots in a dark and possibly cool place, it will not be superfluous to cover them from above.

Sometimes I am asked how to store carrots: in the dark or allowed to keep it in the light? The fact is that that carrot, which is stored in a bright place, quickly loses its sweet taste and starts to be bitter. It will not be superfluous to recall the fact that carrots most often begin to decay from the tip, so experienced gardeners simply cut it at the level where the thickness of the root crop reaches at least half a centimeter.
