How to print roman numerals in Word

Although Roman numerals in Word, and in life also, are used extremely rarely, but it is necessary to know how they are written. Especially as they are often found in textbooks and in literature. And if you write on paper, everyone can, then many people, if necessary, write them in Word's problems. The article will discuss how to print them in this program.

Using the Latin keyboard layout

We'll start with the most simple way how you can type Roman numerals in Word, using the Latin keyboard layout. All that a common man in the street needs to know is the rule for constructing such figures. The fact is that they are completely similar to Latin. For example, the Roman numeral 10 is written as the English letter X, and 5 is V.

All you need to know is how to switch the layout itself. But this is also done simply. There are two ways. The first involves using the Alt + Shift or Ctrl + Shift hotkeys (depending on the operating system). The second way is to switch using the special menu on the Windows taskbar. It is located in the lower right corner, and the exact location you can see in the picture below.

You can also mention the third method, which is used extremely rarely. But it should be noted immediately that it works only on the eighth and tenth versions of Windows. It consists of pressing the hot keys Win + Space.

Using the table of symbols

Roman numerals in Word can also be printed in another way. Of course, to someone it may seem ineffective and simply useless, but it is still worth mentioning. It consists in using a special table with symbols, which is in each version of the program. Now an example of use in the 2003 version will be given, but it is worth saying that you can write Roman numerals in Word 2010 in the same way.

On the main page of the program, you must first press the "Insert" button, which is located above the top panel, and select the "Symbols" item in the drop-down menu. As a result, a window opens with a huge number of characters. You just need to find what you need and click on the "Paste" button.

Using the code of the sign

Before you insert Roman numerals in Word using the symbol table, you can pay attention to the code of the inserted character. Remembering it, you can print Roman numerals, without entering into a table with symbols. Now the codes of the most popular figures will be given:

  • V-0056;
  • X-0058;
  • I-0049;
  • L-004C;
  • M-004D;
  • C-0043.

Now it only remains to print the character code in the document and press Alt + X, then the desired character will be inserted into the text.

Using CTRL + F9

But what if you simply do not know how to write or build Roman numerals? In this case, you will be helped by an embedded tool in a program that converts Arabic numerals to Roman ones. By the way, it's quite easy to use, so no one will cause difficulties when using it.

Initially, you need to move the cursor to the desired location, click the left mouse button (LMB) and press Ctrl + F9. After that, the curly brackets appear, between which you have to write "(number) \ * Roman". As a result, you will get something like: "{(number) \ * Roman}". Now, after pressing F9, the specified number will be displayed in Roman numerals.
