How to perform oil landscapes with beginners

Do you want to start painting landscapes with oil, like real masters? Of course, this is not an easy task, and quality comes with experience, but it's never too late to create your first picture. Prepare everything you need, be patient, follow the recommendations. At you already from the first time it will turn out a worthy ornament for an interior.

Tools and materials

To start painting landscapes with oil, prepare the following:

  • Canvas or sheet of fiberboard, better than a small size - approximately from the album sheet A4 (for the first time it is enough).
  • Soil (at home, you can use gelatin, PVA glue or buy an already prepared base).
  • Oil paints (buy only those colors in the correct volume for the volume, which you will need in the first job).
  • Brushes (wide, medium and thin for working out small details - at least one at a time).
  • Solvent or white spirit.
  • Palette (suitable plastic sheet or porcelain unnecessary saucer).
  • A cloth for wiping hands and brushes.
  • Easel or sketch book (optional).

As for the last two positions, they provide the convenience of work. Brushes still have to be washed in a solvent, but it is better to get wet with a rag. Drawing on the easel is convenient, since you can move away and evaluate the work from afar. Sketchbook is indispensable in the open-air, that is, when working in nature. If you do your first picture at home, for example from a sample, and you are not used to drawing on a vertical surface, work directly on the table. In this case, you should sometimes put the work in a vertical position and look at it from afar. It's easier to see mistakes.

Landscapes for beginners

His first picture is better to start with an attempt to repeat the sample or at least a photo. In the first case, it is worth choosing, for example on the Internet, the simplest example, made in the same technique. Performing landscapes with oil from nature is difficult, as a beginner needs a lot of time, and because of the movement of the sun during the day and the change of weather, the picture can very quickly change. So work at a calm pace and in familiar conditions.

We paint the landscape in stages

Before you start, you need to prepare the foundation. The easiest way, of course, is to buy a ready-made primed canvas, fixed on a solid foundation. Drawing the canvas on the stretcher, priming the surface, even a sheet of fiberboard, is not easy and takes a lot of time. So, you found a sample, prepared everything you need. Get to work. The stages will be as follows:

  1. Apply the contour drawing to the prepared surface. When working with a sample, it's easiest to do this step using drawing on the grid. To do this, a transparent layer with a prepared checkered matrix is superimposed on the template. On its sheet the same grid is made with thin lines of a simple pencil. Analyzing how the contours go in relation to the boundaries of the cells on the sample, you are trying to do it as much as possible at home.
  2. When you start working with paints, first a wide brush background and build all the objects without using a large number of shades. You should get a generalized system of color combinations and relationships. Start with light shades. You will always have time to darken. Analyze not only the tone of a particular object, but also how different it is from the background color or the neighboring element.
  3. Prescribe (oil painting is written, but not painted) with a medium-sized brush smaller details.
  4. Do not forget to move away from work by placing it vertically.
  5. Fine-tune the detail. Please note that small parts should be marked only in the foreground. The background should be left generalized. This creates an effect of space, perspective.
  6. The last stroke mark in the picture glare - the brightest places.

Once again, evaluate the work from afar. If you like everything, leave to dry.

Making a picture

So, you have mastered the gradual drawing of the landscape with oil and have fulfilled your first masterpiece. To make it look complete, it must be placed in a baguette. This is a wooden or plastic frame with a flat or curved surface. Correctly selected frame gives work completeness. Try on several different "clothes" in a baguette workshop. Let the professionals recommend you which option is better. Do not take too wide, ornate and multicolored frames. This thing should complement your picture, and not act in the main role.

Thus, painting landscapes with oil is not such a difficult task. The main thing is to understand the basic principles, to master the necessary methods of work and to properly arrange the picture. And still inspiration and patience should become your main companions in hard creative work.
