How to paint slate? Paint for slate

Slate is one of the most popular roofing materials. Many roofs of buildings and buildings are covered by it. Of course, there are many materials that can replace slate. However, this roof covering has long occupied a certain niche in the market. At the same time, the appearance of the material can be improved with a special paint. This method of processing has its advantages. How and how to paint the slate?

Is it obligatory to paint

Slate painting is a procedure that allows not only to improve the appearance of the roof, but also to enhance some properties of the material. Today, asbestos is made not only profiled sheets, but also flat plates, and panels. What gives the painting of slate? To handle such a material, acrylic dye is usually used. This coating is designed specifically for products from asbestos. At the same time, not only the decorative qualities of the roofing material increase, but also the service life of the roofing material considerably increases. After all, acrylic paint is able to withstand weathering. In addition, the coating allows the creation of an additional protective layer.

How does the paint affect the material

Before you paint the slate, it is worth to clarify on what properties of the material affects the paint:

  • Protects the roof from asbestos from premature destruction.
  • Reduces the degree of water absorption.
  • Reduces the amount of harmful substances released by asbestos.
  • Increases the operational quality of the roof, increasing its service life by about half.
  • Does not allow the material to build up lichens and moss.

It should be noted that if the integrity of the paint layer is violated, it is necessary to immediately restore it. Do not wait for the next processing slate. After all, such a roofing material itself is porous. Under the influence of atmospheric precipitation, it quickly becomes contaminated. As a result, the roof of the building can get an untidy look.

Precautionary measures

Processing, as well as painting of slate should be carried out using additional means of protection. To perform the work it is necessary to use a respirator for the protection of the respiratory system, gloves and glasses.

All compounds used for the treatment of the roof, contain substances that can prevent fungal growth. Some chemical components of such products are toxic and can harm a person.

Roof Preparation

Before you paint the slate, you need to prepare the surface. To do this, a number of procedures should be carried out to increase the resistance of the material to external factors. To protect slate from biological destruction, it is necessary to treat the roof with an antiseptic. You can carry out this procedure yourself using a special sprayer or brush.

It is worth considering that every year the material becomes more porous due to thawing in the spring and freezing in the winter. Because of this, the number of cracks in the sheet slate gradually increases. In a moist environment, bacteria begin to multiply in them, capable of destroying asbestos cement.

Painting the slate roof is possible after processing the material with a water repellent. It is best to use such a means for roofing, which is not more than one year old.

We ground and paint

A special value is primer for slate. For the treatment of asbestos cement, it is recommended to use formulations that are designed for deep penetration. In this case, the problem is the porosity of the material. Such a primer makes it possible to strengthen the asbestos cement, as well as to ensure good adhesion with the paint and varnish coating. If you treat the roofing material with such a composition, you can save. Paints to cover the slate roof will require significantly less. In addition, the material will lie more evenly.

Apply a primer with a construction sprayer. Consumption of the agent is from 100 to 150 grams per sheet of roofing material. Processing of asbestos cement should be carried out at an air temperature of 5 to 30 degrees above zero. Before you paint the slate, it is worth waiting for the primer to dry. This takes at least 12 hours.
