How to make smoking pipes by yourself: step by step description

Now many smokers start to think about their health, many drop this habit, while others switch from cigarettes to ordinary tobacco, in which there are much fewer impurities. However, he needs a tube. The trading network offers a wide choice, but really high-quality copies are very expensive. And now we will discuss how to make a smoking pipe yourself.

Material for making a pipe

Masters make pipes from briar. It is a growth in the root of a tree called heather. It is ideal for creating such a specific product. After all, the heather grows in the stony soil of the Mediterranean climate, and the briard absorbs moisture and minerals, which subsequently give all the necessary qualities to the tree, which is so appreciated by the craftsmen making pipes from it.

Local tree species for making a pipe

However, in our region this tree does not grow, and if you buy it, it will cost a fortune. You can make smoking pipes with your own hands, materials for which it is easy to find in local gardens. For the production of the tube, fruit trees suitable for which dense wood: apple, pear, plum. But it's best to choose a cherry, its fibers are the densest of the listed rocks, so it will not burn for a long time. All the others are also good, but they are charred a bit faster. It is advisable to use the root part for harvesting, but it is suitable for the raw or stem material. Fruit trees with smoking have an excellent flavor. Some people like the taste of cherries, others like apple trees, everything depends on their own preferences. That's why it's better to make a smoking pipe with your own hands.

Material preparation

Having decided on the type of wood, you also need to know how to properly dry the suitable workpiece. You can not cut a living branch or part of the root and immediately make a tube out of it. On the material, the sections are painted over or covered, so that moisture can not quickly evaporate through them. It should gradually come out through the bark, which in no case can not be immediately removed. And so the tree should lie until next year - then the fibers will gradually dry out, and in the structure there will be no cracks. And only after this time it will be possible to remove the bark and grind the shape of the pipe.

You can also make a pipe from a dried log. To do this, cut the workpiece from its center. Of course, if it was in a dry place. Cut the extreme places with cracks, after which there is solid wood, which has no flaws. After that, remove the bark and cut out the desired size of the workpiece, but with a margin of five centimeters. Then the tree is postponed for a week, because it must dry completely, after which microcracks may appear. If you immediately begin to grind the shape of the pipe, then the revealed flaws will spoil everything. And in a week, even if small cracks open, they will be on the left stock, and after cutting it will be the ideal surface for carving.

Manufacturing process

To begin with, cut out a simple angular blank reminiscent of a square or diamond. Its surface needs to be ground to see the structure of the tree and determine if it has defects. If everything is fine, we will mark out the future form in more detail to know where the smoking chamber will be, and where the chibouk is the part where the mouthpiece is fastened. Identify all the details and openings with a pencil. It is also worthwhile to draw directions, so that when drilling it is easier to withstand angles.

Making the smoking pipes with their own hands, the masters first of all drill a hole for the chamber into which tobacco will be poured. First it is worth to do it with a thin drill, after which it is thicker, until the hole becomes the right diameter. But do not immediately bring to the final size, you need to leave the allowance in a few millimeters, then to sand it with sandpaper. After all, the drill leaves an uneven surface, and it should be smooth.

After that, a hole is drilled from the side of the smoke channel in the place where the chibouk is projected. It should be done carefully, because making pipes with your own hands is a very precise and time-consuming process. The opening for the removal of smoke should be strictly at the bottom of the tobacco chamber. This is a very important point, because if you make it a little higher, then the inside of the tobacco will not burn completely, which can lead to souring, and this will worsen the taste of the tube and smoke. This channel can be from 3 to 4 mm. The wider it is, the tube will be drier. By the way, it is better to equip it with a filter in order to avoid getting ashes into the middle. In addition, a wide smoke channel makes it easy to clean the tube with a brush. After the holes are ready and precisely connected, you can proceed to create an external shape.

Of course, it is better to make smoking pipes by hand on the machine, it will be much easier and faster. But if you do not have such a technique, you can still make a good copy manually.

Next (when working on the machine) you need to make circles that you can, all the other parts are cut by hand with a well-honed cutter. It is important to make the edge of the motif already narrower than the entire width of the chibouk. This is necessary in order to be able to put on the mouthpiece, and the two parts were on the same plane. After that, the surface is sanded outside and inside with sandpaper. First, all the tubercles left by the knife are removed, and then the scratches are removed from the flat surface. However, you can leave the external parts unprocessed - here everything is done to the taste of the master.

Selection of material for the mouthpiece

We continue to talk about how to make a smoking pipe, and now we will create a mouthpiece. It can be made with ebonite or acrylic. The first material is softer, but the polishing remains for a very short time. It is better to choose those who, when smoking, hold a pipe in their teeth. Acrylic is more solid and durable, and therefore it is suitable to keep the product in hand in the process.

Manufacturing process

You need to take a stick of ebonite or acrylic from 10 to 15 cm long. To smoke, when smoking, the smoking pipes do not make shorter ones than 10 cm. With this in mind, we choose the size of the mouthpiece. In it, make a hole along the entire length of the drill, whose diameter is 3 mm. Begin with the part where there will be a connection with the chibouk. Then, for half the length, dilate the hole to the diameter of the smoke channel. Then this step, which is formed, you need to smooth out. To do this, you need to cut a triangular tip on a wire 4 mm in diameter. It must be pushed to the stop and gently turned several times.

After that, the channel is ground with a thin wire with glued on it sandpaper. The place where the mouthpiece will be is widened horizontally to make an oval of 5-6 mm. So the smoke will be more easily absorbed by the smoker. On the other hand, the hole in the mouthpiece is widened to fit tightly on the chibouk, but without much effort.

External molding of the mouthpiece

Mouthpieces, as well as smoking pipes, are processed by their own hands. You can grind on the machine or use improvised tools. The form is also arbitrary. After that, it is necessary to grind the surface first with fine sandpaper, and then with felt with GOI paste. If you make an ebonite mouthpiece, you can bend it, give it another shape. To do this, it is heated over a gas stove or a candle and then bent.

Wooden smoking pipes can be waxed or etched with their hands - so their surface will look elite, and the tree pattern will be much more distinct and, of course, it is an excellent protection of the surface of the tree.

Etching tube

An excellent mordant may be a two-potassium potassium, diluted in water, as well as oxalic acid. After the reaction with the release of gases ceases, this indicates that the mixture is ready for etching the tree. The more concentrated it is, the more intense the color and contrast of the pattern of the fibers of the tree. The tube is immersed in the composition until it becomes the desired tone. You can store this mordant as much as you want in a glass-tight container.

Waxing

There is an excellent and simple way. Requires wax. 100 g it needs to be finely chopped, after adding mastic (12 g), instead it can be pounded rosin (25 g). The selected mixture is put on fire, so that everything becomes liquid. Then remove it and immediately pour 50 g of turpentine - warm. After this, the mixture should be thoroughly stirred and drained into the necessary container. In it, the composition is stored until necessary to use it. Take the mixture, apply it on a woolen or cotton cloth and carefully rub in a tree.

Cleaning the pipe

Do this when the tube has completely cooled down. It is necessary to carefully detach the mouthpiece, twisting it clockwise. If you pull it out with an uncommon force, you can damage both parts of the tube. The mouthpiece is cleaned with special brushes, winding them from the mouth of the mouthpiece. It is better to have a few, for a more convenient process.

It is necessary to clean the chibouk after every smoking process. Ershik is led from the side where the mouthpiece was. After all is cleared, the brush is left inside the chibouk until the time comes to fill the tube with tobacco. Completing the cleaning of the product by rubbing all its external surfaces. After that, the tube is blown out to exclude any deposits or debris that could remain inside.

For general cleaning of the tube, use wax, alcohol, as well as various other liquids, conduct it as it gets dirty. And only the owner himself knows when simple maintenance is not enough.

Now the tube is more an element of decor, it is seldom smoked, because it needs to be taken care of. They are now like a good wine, which only occasionally savor. There are also many accessories for this kind of research (stand for smoking pipes, for example), which can be of different shapes and sizes.

What is the difference between the most expensive and collectible tubes from conventional

First of all, this is an ideal material - briard. In collection copies, which are the most expensive, the fibers of this remarkable tree are visible, woven together chaotically, but the master presents them as if they were grown just for this smoking pipe. They, like the rays that envelop the smoking chamber, pass into the chibouk. Such an art object as a collector's smoking pipe, reviews are always enthusiastic not only from knowledgeable people, but also from the townsfolk. After all, a masterpiece always has a special aura and, of course, appearance. And looking at it, you can not catch yourself thinking that you can change its shape or appearance. This is the talent of the master.
