Observation is what? Observation in the hospital

A modern woman who is expecting a child has the opportunity to choose her own maternity hospital in which she will give birth. Usually, pregnant women long before this point consider many options and study the characteristics of various medical institutions. Most often, questions about the functioning of the hospital do not arise. All names of departments and wards of the hospital are familiar and understandable. Everyone knows what is the prenatal ward, the birth hall and the department for newborns. But many women are stumped by the word "observational". This branch name frightens women, and not everyone knows what it is. There are a lot of myths associated with it, and some are terribly afraid to get there. Is it such a bad place, and who is sent there?

What it is

Observation is the medical observation of people who have been in contact with patients or who are suspected of an infectious disease. They are isolated in a special room and monitor their health around the clock, providing the necessary medical care. If necessary, make vaccinations, process and disinfect things. Both observance and quarantine are needed in order not to expose healthy people to the risk of contracting. They are usually conducted by sanitary and epidemiological services in case of outbreaks of infectious diseases or when people leave the epidemic zone. And only in maternity homes, observance is always, because it is very important that newborn babies do not become infected because there are infected people nearby. Very often, before birth, it is not possible to fully examine a woman, and you can not risk putting it with other pregnant women. An observation is planned for everyone who is suspected of an infectious disease, who has already fallen ill, such as influenza, or for carriers of antibodies to hepatitis viruses.

Department of Observation

It is in every maternity hospital, and in large cities there is even a separate observational medical institution. What are they created for? Observation is the isolation of infected or healthy people who have been in contact with patients. In the maternity ward, this department is very important, because pregnant women and women who have already given birth, as well as newborn children, are highly prone to infections. Therefore, all those who suspect a disease are placed in the observation. No one is immune from getting there. But contrary to the fears of women, it is impossible to catch anything there: observing in the maternity hospital is the cleanest department. It is provided with all necessary equipment to help with complicated and pathological births. Some pregnant women even want to get there, since the attention from the staff there is more to the woman and the child.

Branch Features

There are a number of mandatory conditions for this department:

- it is located on the first floor of the maternity home, has a separate reception room and an exit for discharge. This is to ensure that patients do not come into contact with other parturients;

- Chambers in the observation are designed for 2-3 people, there are some;

- Cleaning in the unit is carried out more carefully than in the entire maternity home: all premises are washed and treated with disinfectants several times a day, they often change their beds to women;

- special requirements are also imposed on medical personnel: they change work clothes and process footwear every day;

- doctors in this department are usually more qualified, because they have to deal with severe cases of childbirth. Many specialists, for example, a pediatrician, come from the maternity home;

- the joint stay of the mother and the child is not allowed in the observation, and the question of breastfeeding is decided strictly individually.

At what diseases fall into the observation

This, as already mentioned, all kinds of infections:

- SARS, influenza, angina;

- threat of abortion and its pathological course;

- Colpitis, thrush;

- pyelonephritis;

- pustular or fungal diseases of the skin, nails and hair;

- diarrhea and other intestinal infections.

In addition, there can transfer a woman after childbirth in the usual ward, if she:

- mastitis;

- Purulent discharge from the uterus or sutures;

- endometritis;

- skin irritation in a newborn baby.

Who else can get into this department

To give birth in an observation can be directed not only a woman with any infectious diseases, but also completely healthy. In which cases this can happen:

- if she does not have an exchange card upon admission to the hospital;

- the map does not contain any necessary analyzes;

- if the mother has left the water more than 12 hours ago;

- Women after home birth and prematurely gave birth outside the walls of a medical institution;

- a slight increase in temperature upon admission to the hospital.

Do I need to be afraid of this place

Many pregnant women are afraid to give birth in observance. They believe that there is a great risk of getting infected. In addition, this department has myths that there are "homeless", alcoholics, people with AIDS or tuberculosis. But this is not so, because for pregnant women with such diseases there are special departments in infectious hospitals. And observing in the maternity hospital is a place where ordinary maternity leave, sometimes simply transferred to their main ward. At the slightest suspicion of inflammation or infection is sent only there. And do not be afraid of this place - the doctors there are usually more qualified, and the staff pays more attention to both the woman and the child. The equipment and preparations there are not worse, and often even better than in the genus itself. Therefore, a pregnant woman on admission to the hospital does not need to be scared when she heard the word "observational". This is in many cases even better for her and for the child.

Reviews about this branch

Some women, when they choose a maternity home, tend to get to the observation. After all, this is the cleanest branch in the hospital, and there are no more than three people in the wards. Round-the-clock observation before and after childbirth allows to avoid complications. And some people like that the office is on the ground floor, so you can easily chat with relatives. In some maternity hospitals there are even visitors allowed. Therefore, do not be afraid of observation - there the mother will receive the most qualified help, and the child will not catch any infection. Most of the women who were in this department are very enthusiastic about him - most of all, of course, they like the cleanliness and attentive attitude of the staff.
