How to make modular paintings with your own hands for interior decoration

Modular paintings - a phenomenon in the design art is not new. Similar experiments were done by artists back in the 60s of the last century, when the aesthetics of minimalism in the design of premises entered the fashion. Modern interiors with a minimal amount of furniture and large free spaces of walls, which must be "filled" with color or original, unusual avant-garde decor elements, have revived this method of decoration. What is a modular or segmented picture? This is a picturesque canvas or a photopannel, divided into several separate modules, which are assembled on the wall so that a single work is created as a whole. The picture is divided into segments in different ways: for longitudinal, transverse or diagonal parts, or for those and others. Then each separate fragment is placed on the wall, leaving small spaces between them, in parallel or offset. Segmented creations can also consist of a large number of abstract fragments that together resemble a patchwork quilt. More often make paintings modular on the canvas, pulling each fragment on a separate stretcher, the baguette is not used. And the modules can be of the same size and shape, and different. Collected on the wall, they create an additional decorative effect.

Make modular paintings with your own hands not difficult. To do this, they often use ready-made wall-papers or reproductions of large-size paintings printed on cardboard. You can take any picture you like, enlarge and print it in a specialized company. How to make the most modular picture?

Depending on what is the basis for the segmented creation - photo printing on paper or drawing on canvas - choose its base. Canvas is stretched on a special stretcher - it is a frame made of wooden racks (often used by artists) - with the help of a construction stapler. Photo printing on thick paper or cardboard is glued to a base made of, for example, foam, other light synthetic materials that can easily be found in a construction shop. It is important that they have a smooth smooth surface, light weight, easily attached to the wall and were voluminous (thickness not less than 1.5 cm). Then the modular paintings, made by themselves, will look more impressive.
After the base has been prepared, the stretchers of the right size are put together, the foam sheets are bought, proceed to the next stage. The picture is first visually, and then divided by pencil into separate segments-modules. Separating features are carried out in different ways, the main thing is that after the assembly on the wall, an "impressive" work is obtained. Then, on the drawn lines, the picture is cut and pasted onto the prepared base. In this way, modular pictures are produced well with their own hands from photo wallpapers or reproductions printed on paper. The edges of each fragment coincide with the edge of the base, so there is no distortion of the whole work.

Modular paintings made on canvas, have a certain specificity. The canvas must be tensioned and secured from the underside of the stretcher. To do this, each fragment must have a certain margin, overlapping the figure. Consequently, for a modular work, it is necessary to have not a single whole web that is divided into parts, but individual segments printed on the canvas with a "stock", from which the whole product is then compiled. It is much easier to make modular pictures with your own hands from a finished fabric with a bright abstract pattern that does not require an exact alignment of the picture. From the fabric we cut out pieces of this size so that they can easily be pulled onto the stretcher and fixed on the back side. When selecting a pattern, it should be taken into account that after drawing on the frame, the pattern is slightly deformed, changing its outlines. Then the finished modules are placed on the wall in the required sequence. The modular picture is ready.
