Distilled water is a liquid that is indispensable in medicine and some everyday situations. Scientists and adherents of a healthy lifestyle do not cease to discuss the validity of the use of purified water (especially as a drink) and how to make distilled water at home. Definition

Distilled water - in fact, ordinary water, which was purified from impurities by distillation (evaporation). We can say that this is "steam" water, or "frozen", because the process of distillation can take place in diametrically opposite directions. Firstly, under laboratory conditions, with conventional water, steam is collected (distillate), which is condensed into a separate, clean container. So get the liquid without any impurities - distilled water. Secondly, the standing water is frozen in clean containers, but not until the end. Using the difference in the freezing time of a pure liquid and impurities, ice (about 70% of the total water volume) is obtained, which is extracted and thawed in a sterile container.

Distilled water in medicine

Mainly it is used in medicine. Deprived of all kinds of impurities (useful and harmful), it is an excellent solvent and the basis for the creation of various medical and cosmetic products. Afraid of poisoning and contamination, many people drink only distilled water. Of course, it is not harmful for drinking, but it is not useful either, because the natural composition of water is priceless for the human body - salts, minerals and other substances dissolved in it. To protect yourself from the dangers of tap water, it is enough to use filters. Or, if you do not trust them, you should drink bottled water, which is sold in pharmacies and stores. But constantly using only distilled - this is too much.

Distilled water in everyday life

In everyday life, purified water is good for filling aquariums, if previously dissolve in it a selected by composition "filler", which is sold in pet stores and is selected individually for your fish. Also, it is often used in various household appliances (air humidifiers, irons, steamers) to extend their service life.

How to get distilled water

In the laboratory, for this purpose, two flasks are used, connected by a tube, which is cooled. The first flask (it is higher) with water is heated and maintained the process of boiling, the steam condenses in a cold tube, the resulting drops of pure water flow into the second flask. Or in the forms of water subject to partial freezing - this method is less laborious, but with it there is a high water flow, and we are forced to treat it very carefully.

Why stand water

How to get distilled water from tap water? First, defend. It's no secret that in the water, which is by pipes (not very, I must say, clean) gets to our house, a lot of harmful impurities. This, firstly, chlorine is certainly a very powerful disinfectant, but it is able to accumulate in the human body and cause a lot of serious diseases and poisonings. The same applies to volatile impurities and heavy metal compounds, also present in tap water.
The better and cleaner the source material, the better the result.
Therefore, water should be poured into a clean open container and not touch, it is better not even to move from the place for twenty-four hours. In the first hours, the process of evaporation of volatile impurities, including chlorine, will take place. The salts of heavy metals will then settle. In a day you need to very carefully drain no more than three quarters of the water - we will distill it.

Getting distilled water at home. Method one

You will need:

  • A twenty-liter stainless steel saucepan;
  • Cover for this pan (better cone-shaped);
  • Glass bowl (bowl);
  • Round grate for oven or microwave oven;
  • water.

Do not focus on the fact that all dishes should be perfectly clean, because we model the laboratory conditions. Let's get started.

  • Pour tap water into the pot, about half the volume. Give water to stay at least six hours, and better - a day.
  • At the bottom of the pot, put the grate, and on it - a glass bowl. The bowl must be high enough that water does not fall directly into the pan from it.
  • Turn on the heat and bring the water to a boil, then maximally reduce the temperature to such an extent that the process of boiling was smooth and not very intense.
  • Turn the lid over, pour ice in it and cover the pan.
  • Steam will rise upward, condense on the cold lid, and distilled water will flow into the bowl.
  • You just have to control the process: keep the boil, drain the water from the lid, add ice if necessary.
  • When the bowl is full, turn off the fire and gently pull it out of the pan, you can wait for full cooling.
  • Pour the water into a sterilized storage tank.

Now you know how to make distilled water yourself. But this is not the only possibility.

Method of the second

It is even closer to the laboratory.

You will need:

  • A twenty-liter stainless steel saucepan,
  • Bottle with a straight throat,
  • Bottle with a twisted throat,
  • water.

Strictly speaking, bottles are our flasks. Of course, it's rather difficult to find or make a glass bottle with a twisted neck, but if you succeed, the process will go much faster. Still it is possible to use a strong hose, on a diameter suitable to bottles of bottles. All mine-clean and proceed.

  • In the first bottle pour stagnant tap water, slightly more than half.
  • Connect the bottles directly between the neck and the neck or by means of a short hose. The connection should be as tight as possible.
  • Pour the pan with water, its volume should cover the bottle more than half. Put the pan on the fire, bring to a boil and support this process.
  • In boiling water, lower the first bottle, place it in a saucepan at an angle of about thirty degrees.
  • Put an ice pack on the top (empty) bottle to ensure the condensation process.
  • The water will evaporate from the bottom bottle (bulb), along the hose (neck) to rise to the second and there, condensing, accumulate.
  • Continue when the required amount of purified water is collected.

Now we will learn how to make distilled water at home by freezing. Everything is very simple. We put water in the reservoirs for making ice and put it in the freezer. On the physical and chemical properties, pure water will freeze faster than water with impurities.
When ice was formed in the tanks (about half or slightly more), merge the top liquid and melt the ice at room temperature - and get distilled water.
