High CPU temperature: how to lower yourself?

This material will describe the basic and most accessible ways of how to be in a situation where the CPU temperature is too high. How to lower? Which way to choose? What is needed for this? This is not a complete list of issues discussed in the article. Using the recommendations given in the following, it is possible in most cases to solve the problem of overheating of the CPU.

What is the problem here? Basic ways to solve it

All the currently existing CPUs are made of a semiconductor material such as silicon. A temperature of the order of 70-100 0 C leads to the fact that this component of the personal computer starts to skip the cycles of information processing, its performance decreases, and in some cases it fails. Therefore, it is very important to control precisely this parameter of the CPU and, when it exceeds the limits of the norm, take measures to ensure that it returns again to the acceptable limits. The main ways how to lower the temperature of the processor, you can divide into 2 types:

  • Hardware.

  • Software.

The first group of methods includes the replacement of thermal paste or cooling system and revision of the cooler. In the second case, software is used, and this can be either system software or application software (it is sometimes called special software). Hardware methods of lowering the degree of heating of the central processor are much easier to use on stationary system units, because the process of parsing the PC in this case is quite simple. But software solutions are much better suited to mobile PCs. In this case, access to the cooling system is very difficult, and it is rather difficult to replace thermal paste or cooler. Therefore, it is better to use additional methods: BIOS or some additional software. In some cases, the chip can successfully function in normal mode at a value of 80-85 0 C, and the maximum permissible temperature for it is 105 0 C. For other semiconductor solutions, the maximum is 70-75 0 C, and they work at 50-55 0 C.

Software Optimization

Reducing the computational load on the CPU is the first stage in the fight against such a negative phenomenon as the overestimated temperature of the processor. How to lower it in this case? And it's very simple: start with running applications that function in the background.

Closing each of these background applications should reduce the computational load on the CPU and, as a result, reduce its thermal load. Another possible way of how to lower the temperature of the processor on a laptop or a stationary system unit is the use of special software. Again, the result of the operation of such software is possible on new models of laptops and only in those cases where the frequency and voltage supplied to the CPU can be dynamically adjusted.

The essence of this utility is that, depending on the thermal state of the processor and the level of complexity of the program code it processes, its operating parameters (frequency and voltage) change. Essentially, this program duplicates Intel's proprietary technology, called TurboBoost. Therefore, on laptops of this manufacturer, you can refuse to install such a specialized software and activate the desired mode of operation of the PC.

If the computer is based on a chip from AMD, then in this case you need to use a similar technology from this manufacturer, which is called Cool'n'Quiet. If the activation of the previously mentioned technologies does not give the desired result, you can set the minimum values of frequency and voltage manually in the BIOS and check the degree of heating of the PC in this mode. If the temperature falls outside the permissible limits, the problem can only be solved by hardware.

Cleaning the cooling system

The next way to lower the temperature of the processor on the computer is to clean the cooling system. On the heatsink cooler is collected dust, and its gradual accumulation leads to the fact that the heat sink is deteriorating. Therefore, it must be periodically cleaned. On the system unit in this case, everything is extremely simple: remove the side metal plate that is on the other side of the motherboard, and with a hair dryer (only need to turn off the heating mode and blow only cold air), toothpicks and other additional means clean the cooler .   • We disassemble the PC case.
