Growing kohlrabi in the country

Cabbage loves most, if not stewed, then fresh, if not white, then certainly color or kohlrabi. The photo of the latter can be misleading, because it is not like the usual cabbage known to all. That is why many summer residents treat it as exotic and shun. But in vain. Kohlrabi (or cauliflower) is not only useful, but also a delicious vegetable, which is also very easy to grow on a garden plot.

Cultivation of kohlrabi is carried out both by seedling method and by sowing seeds in open ground. In order to harvest at the very beginning of summer, seedlings of early ripening varieties are used. It is grown in boxes or film greenhouses. But unlike cabbage cabbage seedlings, kohlrabi seedlings are not subjected to pre-plant hardening for more than three days, as this leads to the arrowing of the plant. The same happens if the seedling is overgrown. It must be planted no later than 30 days after the shoot. The seedlings should have 5-6 true leaves. Seedlings in the open ground are transplanted at the end of May.

Since this vegetable belongs to early-ripening crops, its harvest can be obtained several times a year. Cultivation of kohlrabi in seedlings promotes the production of mature fruits within a month after planting. The size of a vegetable depends largely on how the plant was planted. Seedlings should be planted in rows, the distance between seedlings should be at least 25 cm, otherwise the fruits will be small. But the most early varieties are planted more densely, since ripe turnip quickly cut, giving rise to their nearest neighbors. You can not drop kohlrabi deeply, since it significantly inhibits the formation of the fetus, and the plant can go into color. In properly planted seedlings, the roots are located at the surface of the soil. They are only slightly covered with earth.

Cultivation of kohlrabi requires fertilized and fertile soil. During the ripening of the fruit, the plant should be fed with complex fertilizers. Care for kohlrabi is also in the regular loosening and weeding the beds. The first time is loosening 10 days after disembarkation. No hilling is required.

Fetal ripening takes an average of one and a half months depending on the cultivar. With proper approach, cultivation of kohlrabi does not require much effort and special skills from summer residents. The finished fruit in diameter should not exceed 10 cm. In case it recurs, solidification will occur, and the cauliflower will lose any gastronomic value. For storage, it is excavated along with the root and placed in a cellar.

Many nutritionists highly appreciate kohlrabi, its benefit lies in the fact that it contains a huge amount of essential vitamins and minerals. In the stem of the plant are such trace elements as copper, zinc, calcium, potassium, chlorine, phosphorus, iodine, iron and sodium. In kohlrabi there are few calories. Also in this vegetable there is a special substance - tartronic acid. It actively prevents the processing of carbohydrates into fats. That's why many include kohlrabi in the diet for weight loss. Cooked on the basis of this vegetable salads and second courses help people suffering from extra pounds, burn fat deposits without harm to health.
