Global Question: The Food Problem

The food problem in the world arose simultaneously with the appearance of a human being in it and changed its scale and traits in the course of the development of mankind, having become a global one in the second half of the 20th century. The food problem in the broadest sense of the word is usually attributed to the production, exchange, distribution and consumption of food in individual countries and in the world as a whole. In the narrow sense, it must be understood as providing food for the population, its groups and various social classes.

Food problem   these days   Is one of the most pressing world problems that are acute for humanity. The eradication of malnutrition and hunger in our society is inseparable from the solution of such an urgent issue, also of a global nature, like the eradication of poverty. According to available estimates, over 850 million people on the planet are on a starving diet (less than 1000 kcal / day), which causes physical degradation of the body. Chronic malnutrition affects 1.5 billion people. More than 5 million children die every year from the effects of hunger. The international soundness gives the problem the fact that its solutions can not be achieved by the efforts of individual countries.

The volumes of agricultural production and the level of its development in various countries are explained, first of all, by the availability of suitable land for growing cattle and cultivation of various crops and the efficiency of their use, natural and climatic conditions and material and technical base. The most acute food problem Faces a number of poor countries that are not able to allocate any significant funds for the import of food. The problem of hunger is aggravated by rapid population growth. The number of inhabitants in these countries is ¾ of the world's population and at the same time they consume only a third of the world's total production. The saddest thing about all this is that the gap in food consumption per capita is steadily growing.

The consequence of the population growth is an increase in urbanization and an increase in the turnover of industrial production, which reduces the arable land. This is that arable land is rejected for the construction of roads, cities, industrial facilities. In addition, agricultural land becomes unsuitable due to their contamination with pesticides, radionuclides, oil products, heavy metals, and if they are used improperly, desiccation, salinization, waterlogging or erosion under the influence of wind and water can occur.

The Global Food Problem Is not only a lack of food. It is also closely connected with politics, economics and other spheres of society, the work of which has its shortcomings. An important fact that affects the number of hungry people on the planet is the impossibility of solving the problem within the framework of an individual state. Its solution lies in the joint efforts of the starving countries and countries that have reached abundance in the production of food, which even have to "struggle" with excessive consumption and the resulting illnesses.

The food problem, which occurs in a significant number of developing countries, hinders not only progress, it is also a source of political and social instability in these countries. The eradication of hunger is inseparable from the solution of the problem of poverty, since only a significant increase in the standard of living will create conditions for people to purchase food products not at the expense of other spheres of their lives: education, health, cultural development,

The food problem is a solved issue. Modern science has great potential for increasing food production by increasing the fertility of land, applying breeding and genetic achievements (in livestock and agriculture), using biological resources of the seas and oceans, etc.
