Getting acquainted with the torrent: who are the sidi and feasts

Today our review is devoted to a rather exotic visitor - it will be about torrent trackers. The task is to consider such concepts as a torrent, a tracker, to find out who are the syds and feasts and, finally, to answer the main question: why do you need to stuff your head with all this information? How can it be applied in everyday life?

The theme is really interesting and a bit exotic. Certainly, information about who such sidi and feasts is not vital in the life of the average user. However, I will take the liberty to say that for many readers unfamiliar with the subject of conversation, life can be divided into two periods: before reading the article and after that. And the stage "after" will become more pleasant, useful and saturated than "before".

What are we talking about? In fact, we are talking about access to information, or rather, the possibility of free access to any data (including copyrighted) to an unlimited number of users. For rights holders, this is a painful topic.

From a formal legal point of view, this is the illegal distribution of alien intellectual property. However, there is a big and very inconvenient for the rightholders "but": any person who paid his money for anything can give his purchase to another person or exchange with someone. And no one can forbid it to him, as this will violate his right to dispose of his property.

Without going into the legal subtleties, we can say the following: if you are not engaged in the sale of digital content, but exclusively with its exchange with other people - formally you can not be forbidden to do it. In addition, there are no legal prerequisites for bringing to responsibility the owners of trackers (sites where information about "offers for exchange" is placed). Here it would be appropriate to clarify and consider a number of concepts and terms that we will use in the future:

  • Tracker - the site on which the torrent files directory is located.
  • Torrent file - information about the file and a link to download it from the user's computer.
  • A torrent client is a program that opens a torrent file and exchanges information between users.

Do not be frightened by the abundance of new terms and definitions. Here's how it looks in plain human language:

1. We register on the torrent tracker (the popular rating can be viewed on the Internet).

2. Download and install the torrent client (a program with which you can open a torrent file and upload it to your PC).

3. Using the search, we find the link to the desired file and download it.

At the same tracker of this file is not. A feature of this type of file-sharing is the special organization of the process, in which information is not laid out on servers. It is downloaded directly from the user's computer.

Let's take a closer look at who the sidies and feasts are. So, we are talking about a computer network based on the principle of equality of each participant. That is, each of the registered persons can download information and distribute what they downloaded.

    • Sid (Sider) - a person who has a computer on the computer we need the full amount, and which he "distributes" with the help of the torrent client.
    • A feast is a user uploading a file to himself on a PC (in the process he also gives it away and "distributes" it - it allows you to download it to other users from your computer).
    • Lich (Lycher) is a user who only downloads information.

Seats and feasts in the torrent are key figures. Any file with the help of the torrent client is divided into many small fragments, which are then downloaded / uploaded by other users. In this case, you do not need to do anything - everything happens in automatic mode. The more distributors (sidov) - the higher the download speed for downloaders (feasts). The program automatically connects to the computer closest to you and downloads the fragments of the file you need.

Another definition that explains what feasts are. In the torrent network, there are no servers on which information is stored. Feasts are original nodes (English "peer" - "node"), consisting of users' computers. Imagine a fishing net consisting of cells and nodes. Each node in it is a user's computer that receives or gives information.

Now let's answer the main question: why do you need all this? Why such difficulties? Why bother at all about the question of who are the syds and feasts, to bathe with the installation of some client?

I can tell you that the sheepskin is worth the candle. On torrent trackers you can find for free an incredible amount of information, for which in everyday life would have to pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. You need it or not - decide for yourself.
