Valery Kuzmich was born on August 7, 1943 in Slavgorod, Altai Territory. Early childhood spent in the village of Sodokombinat near Slavgorod. Then the family moved to the small Turkmen city of Kizyl-Arvat.

From childhood, Valery really liked basketball. He left the team only at 16, because the coach left Kizil-Arvat. Then a well-prepared athlete tried to play football. It went well.

At seventeen he was in the Turkmen Republican national team. Later he played in the team of the Institute of Physical Education of the city of Ashgabat. In connection with the draft, he joined the Uzbek club of the regional level "Spartak Samarkand".

After the demobilization he received an offer from the Ashgabat club "Builder". But there were problems with the kidneys. Very early, just 25 years, had to finish his career as a football player.

Rapid start of coaching career

Children, graduates of the football school, got into the team of masters "Kolkhozchi". Nepomnyashchy took a coach in this club. After a short time Valery became the head coach of the strongest at that time team of the republic.

Then there was a break in the coaching career in connection with studying at the Turkmen State University, which Valery successfully graduated in 1969.

In 1984, he received an offer to work as a coach abroad in courses in the capital of the USSR. He agreed. Then bureaucratic obstacles began. He was offered one country, then another, then the third. But no one made a business trip. When, at last, they offered to go to Cameroon, Valery agreed immediately and went to a distant African country.

Cameroonian miracle

In Cameroon Valery was supposed to coach the youth team. I did not speak French. It was supposed to work with the participation of an interpreter.

At the time Nepomnyashchy arrived in Cameroon, head coach Claude Leroy went home to France. He ended his contract, which was not renewed any further. Soon the qualifying rounds for the World Championship in Italy were to be held.

Valery Kuzmich was entrusted to prepare the team for an important match after it played in a draw with a not very strong team of Angola. His work as coach of the Cameroonian national team Kuzmich began with the selection of players in the team, the establishment of its core. Having found a common language with the players, he established relations with the leadership of the country. The results were not long in coming. The matches with Gabon and the Tunisian team were won. The team received a well-deserved ticket to the championship in Italy.

Shortly before leaving for the championship Valery Kuzmich put his team on the local African continental tournament. Nepomnyashchiy remained as a coach only thanks to the intercession of the country's first person.

Further, Valery Kuzmich made the last changes in the composition, which turned out to be extremely successful. He took over 38-year-old Albert Roger Moja Milla. And he replaced the goalkeeper, tuned to losing the team. In addition, he fired two good players for violating the sports regime. However, one then forgave.

In the first match, the Cameroon national team beat the Argentines, among whom was Diego Maradona. This caused an unprecedented furore and interest in Cameroon.

Valery Nepomnyashchy became the first coach, who was able to bring the team from Africa to a quarter of the final. Lost in this championship team Cameroon only the USSR national team and the British.
