Flood in Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Territory

Krasnodar region constantly attracts a lot of tourists thanks to its picturesque places and warm subtropical climate, the only negative of these resorts is downpours and floods. Floods in Gelendzhik are more and more catastrophic every year. After the devastating flood of 2002, the authorities took action, and within 10 years the resort was undermined, but not critical. Three years ago, another flood took the lives of ten residents of the city.

Geographical location of Gelendzhik

The reason for the constant floods in one of the most picturesque places of Russia lies in its location. The town with a population of 53 thousand people is located at the foot of Mount Markotkh. Only 10% of the territory is a plain, the rest is a mountainous terrain and slopes covered by ridges. On the slopes there are many mountain rivers and underground streams. The largest of them are Pshada and Vulan. The Su-Aran River, whose waters are constantly flooded after the rains, is the reason for the flood in Gelendzhik. Precipitation in this area every year drop more often, rains are uneven.

Causes

After the next flood, geologists, environmentalists and local authorities are wondering why the flood occurred, which caused human casualties and destruction. As utilities say, rainstorms can not withstand the pressure of the elements. Even prepared drains can not absorb so much water.

Geologists sound the alarm and talk about unscrupulous developers and city authorities that do not take into account the geoecology of the area and build point objects on the slopes, mountains, destroying vegetation and disrupting the natural drainage system.

The Su-Aran River, which annually pays Gelendzhik, is not marked in any building plan with a red line, its seasonal spills are also not taken into account in the construction of facilities.

The billboard, which in 2012 claimed the lives of five people, was installed without the appropriate permission of geo-environmentalists. After all, the city center is always submerged, even after the usual rain.

Flood in Gelendzhik (2012)

Floods and floods are permanent companions of residents of resort towns in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Local people are already accustomed to the summer floods and cataclysms associated with this phenomenon. In 2012, the flood in Gelendzhik became the largest in the last 10 years. Flood in this scenario hit the city of Gelendzhik in 2002, when the authorities decided that there would be no greater catastrophe of this magnitude in the resort area. With floods, it was possible to manage for ten years, and again in 2012 another tragedy struck the city.

July 6, 2012 began a downpour. Within a few hours, a three-month rainfall fell. Water in some areas of the city rose to two meters. The houses in the lowlands and on the slopes of the mountains were flooded. The most tragic thing is that the flood in Gelendzhik killed 10 people. The total number of victims from a natural catastrophe was 171 people. And five people in the resort city were killed because of an electric shock. On the central street there is a billboard. One of his wires fell to the ground, underwater it was not visible. The man stepped into a puddle and died instantly, four more people rushed to his aid, they suffered the same fate.

The administration of the district tried to cope with the flood as quickly as possible, but the rainfalls could not absorb this amount of precipitation. Because of the rains, the Gelendzhik-Novorossiysk route was partly blocked.

Thousands of houses were flooded and destroyed, thousands of citizens and holidaymakers were hospitalized. Flooding in Gelendzhik in 2012 gave food for many lawsuits and suits to the authorities of the city.

As a result of the flood, five houses were completely destroyed. The seven-meter wave demolished the structure. During the investigation it was found out that one of the residents started building a swimming pool and dammed an underwater stream. As a result, under the pressure of water, the concrete partitions collapsed and the buildings were demolished.

Flood in Gelendzhik in 2014

Many residents of Gelendzhik, who survived the tragedy of 2012, believe that 2014 passed without natural disasters. Thus, several times the central street of Ostrovsky was undermined, but these are trifles, most importantly, without human sacrifices.

The Krasnodar Territory and Gelendzhik are constantly a victim of floods due to their geographical location. Mountain rivers emerge from their shores and bring mud, mud, sand and urban debris along with streams of water to the beautiful resort of Russia. Almost every year in the summer-autumn period Gelendzhik is heated. Reviews about the resort immediately become not entirely rosy, because there is a risk to please the center of the elements right at the height of the rest. So it happened with the holidaymakers of this resort in 2014. In July, there were strong doji, and they provoked a spill of mountain rivers. The central avenue was flooded.

In October, the reason for the flood was the same abundant rain. On the central avenue a lake was formed. For some time, movement in the center of the city was impossible. Several houses and institutions were flooded.

The disaster in Gelendzhik in 2015

This year, the atmospheric cyclone hit the big territory of Russia with rains and a strong wind. Such large cities as Moscow, Voronezh, St. Petersburg, Kursk were flooded, the elements and Gelendzhik did not pass.

On the upcoming bad weather resort authorities were warned by the Hydrometeorological Center, so that the municipal services were "fully armed." They as quickly as possible tried to eliminate the consequences of the two-hour rainfall, which began July 11, 2015. Within 40 minutes, the monthly rainfall rate fell. As usual, central avenues were flooded, especially Stepnaya Street, where many residents suffered material damage in connection with the flooding of houses.

The mayor brought apologies for vacationers for the spoiled rest and expressed hope that another downpour passed Gelendzhik. Comments on the elements from citizens and tourists, along with colorful photos, immediately appeared in social networks.

Consequences of floods

Every year Gelendzhik suffers from downpours and floods. The largest occurred in 2012, people were killed, the infrastructure of the city was significantly damaged, houses and apartments were damaged, many residents lost valuable property.

Gelendzhik after the flood, even a small one, reminds the sewers. Garbage, silt, mud, scraps of roofs and trees. Stormy stream all rushes to the central streets of the city. Water blows everything in its path, turns kiosks and stalls, demolishes carousels and tents.

For the city budget, this turns out to be a real test. Billion losses are borne by the state, but the worst thing is that people are dying.

Measures to solve the problem

City authorities every year, after every flood in Gelendzhik, begin to sound the alarm and say about the mandatory changes in the sewage system. But as practice shows, another heavy downpour - and again mud flows destroy the beautiful city, and the water gathers in the center and stands there for several days.

According to environmentalists, the measure of solving the problem will be the conscientious work of the communal and municipal authorities, who, laying out the plan for expansion and improvement of the city, do not take into account its geographical position and violate the natural biosystem. It's high time for Soviet storm-sewers to modernize, not repair.
