Epilepsy: symptoms and a little about treatment

Epilepsy has been known for a long time, in Russia such patients were understood and pitied. And in our time they are treated on an equal basis with suffering mental illnesses. In fact, epilepsy can not be considered a truly mental illness, as the patient does not lose contact with reality, and just at certain times there are seizures during which a person can not control himself. However, for those around them, these states are not dangerous. Although it turns out that it may well be frightening or upsetting. So, what is epilepsy?

Symptoms of it are variously manifested in one - seizures. But they can be very different for different people. The common cause for all is a change in the electrical activity of brain cells. An uncontrolled transmission of an electropulse from the cortex begins, which causes epilepsy.

Symptoms-seizures always have a beginning, middle and finish. The beginning of the attack the patient remembers clearly, the rest can be forgotten.

What are the first signs of epilepsy?

Before the attack, there is usually a special condition called aura. According to him, the patient determines that soon there will be a seizure. Sometimes it is absent, sometimes after it the attack does not come, therefore the aura is an unreliable symptom. However, there are no better methods, such is epilepsy. Symptoms, that is, aura, include the following symptoms.

First, the symptom deja vu. This means that something objectively new seems vaguely familiar. Epileptic patients are aware of this particular perception, which portends a seizure.

Secondly, the symptom is jamais vu. In this case, on the contrary, the familiar seems to be unfamiliar, as if it were visible for the first time.

Thirdly, changes in perception: strange smells, tastes and sensations. The picture obtained from the eyes becomes fuzzy, sometimes it disappears altogether.

Fourthly, a strong emotional reaction - from panic to happiness, which is accompanied by an acceleration of the thought process.

Fifth, there may be a feeling of numbness, headache, nausea and dizziness.

On what grounds is it determined that a person has epilepsy?

Symptoms are very similar, although everyone has persistent features of the attack, which are repeated many times. Among them may be temporary deafness, the feeling that a person has been affected by a discharge of current, loss of consciousness (maybe for a moment or for several minutes), an intense feeling of dizziness, sometimes the patients even see how they leave the body, although this is a rare symptom. In general, a fit is accompanied by a sense of panic.

Physically, the seizure is manifested by salivation, convulsive movements of the hands and feet, rolling of the eyes, urinary incontinence, trembling, gnashing of teeth, biting of the lips and tongue, trembling of the body and its twitching. The pulse is accelerated, and breathing becomes difficult.

After a fit, a person is hard at giving a letter, and memory is also broken. Emotionally - there is a sense of shame and confusion, a possible sadness, reaching the scale of depression. A person is afraid of repetition.

Characterized by headache and a state of exhaustion, a person wants to drink and sleep. If during the seizure there was no help, there could be injuries - bruises and bitten lips and tongue.

Anyone who can answer the question "How to cure epilepsy?" Is sure to receive the Nobel Prize. So far, there are no effective means, but supportive therapy is very, very effective. In total there are about a dozen preparations for epileptics on the market of drugs. Which of them to prefer - the doctor will tell.

Epilepsy is simply different from the usual way of life. Of course, it hinders the life of the patient, but you need to know that with age, the likelihood of seizures decreases. And you can not laugh at the patients - after all, epilepsy can begin at any age in any person.
