Editing the skirting board with your own hands

The installation of the plinth is the final stage of any repair in the room. After the laying of parquet, laminate or linoleum is finished, the question arises as to which one to choose the plinth among all the variety of its shapes and colors.

The most common skirting, made of wood and plastic (PVC). This finishing element should be selected in the tone of the floor covering, or one tone darker or lighter.

Plinth of plastic suitable for those rooms, the floor in which is covered with tiles, linoleum or carpet.

The use of plastic in the manufacture of skirting allowed manufacturers to obtain complex and elegant shapes, realized in a rich color scheme. The most convenient is the plinth, equipped with a cable channel. Compared to wood, it has the flexibility and helps to hide the small flaws of walls and flooring. In addition, thanks to the rubberized inner surface of such a plinth, the possibility of the appearance of cracks between it, the wall and the floor is excluded.

Due to its simple design (main and decorative strip), the installation of a skirting board with a cable channel is easy enough to carry out independently, without resorting to the help of specialists. To do this, the main plank is carefully attached with screws to the wall. Next, the cables are placed in it and then covered with a decorative strip, fastened to the latches. If you need to add or remove one of the cables, this bar is easily removed and provides access to the wiring. Due to the limited space of the cable duct, experts recommend that the skirting board be installed simultaneously with the main cables, placing them in the main bar.

To cover the joints of adjacent strips of the plinth, as well as for the decoration of corners, special fittings are offered, which is represented by a connecting element, inner and outer corners and end caps.

Wooden skirting well combined with laminate, cork and parquet. Before installing the skirting board, it must be prepared beforehand. To do this, the wooden product is treated with some abrasive material, then ground and painted. In addition, if the skirting board is new, it is preferable to keep it in the room for a day, so that the tree is accustomed to humidity and temperature and in the future it will not deform.

Installation of a wooden plinth, as a rule, should begin with an internal corner. Two strips with the help of a chair or a circular saw are filed at an angle of 45 degrees (this dock looks more neat) and are attached to the corner. Then the remaining skirting boards are prepared. To fix them, nails are used (for these purposes it is better to choose fluted or without hats), which are driven in about every meter. Previously, in the tree on the intended site of attachment, a small groove for the nail heads should be made (then it must be covered with putty with a suitable color). While installing the skirting board, do not forget that it is possible for it to be mechanically damaged, so this work needs to be done carefully, without hurrying up.

As an alternative to fixing, you can use glue or liquid nails. In this case, the glue mixture is applied over the entire length of the wooden strip or by points every 20 cm. Then the plinths should be strongly pressed against the wall and fixed for a day, propping up with heavy objects.

Correctly selected plinth will give completeness to your interior, and competent installation and operation will allow to prolong the service life to this decor element.
