Drama Theater (Mogilev): history, troupe, repertoire

The Drama Theater (Mogilev) has been loved by spectators for more than a century. Today in his repertoire there are performances of various genres. There are also performances for children.

History of the theater

More than a hundred years there is a drama theater (Mogilev). His history goes back to the 17th century, when amateur artists played skits on the squares. The first professional performances in Mogilev were shown in May 1780 by the Italian troupe on the occasion of the arrival of Empress Catherine II in the city. Especially for this was built an elegant wooden building. Three operas were shown for the empress: "Imaginary philosophers", "Frascatan" and "Imaginary beloved".

In 1781 Count ZG Chernyshev organized in Mogilev the leisure time of young Pavel I, who was here on a journey. The heir to the throne was shown the comic opera The New Family and the French comedy Anglomania.

In the last years of the 18th century, Archbishop Bogush Sestrantsevich organized a private theater. The most successful of his production was the drama "Gytsia in Tauris". Bogush Sestrentsevich was a unique person. He graduated from several European universities. He was a teacher of the Radziwills, an officer, a playwright, a Catholic ksenzd.

Representations suited and nobility. In their performances not only serfs took part, but also amateur actors from high society, as well as invited visiting professionals. But such theaters did not go beyond home entertainment.

Professional Russian actors did not come to Belarus often. Permanent guests here were Polish troupes. The spectators of Mogilev were drawn to the theatrical art. There was a growing need for representations. The performances gradually became an integral part of life.

Initially, the Drama Theater (Mogilev) was located in a wooden building, which was built for the arrival of Catherine II. The author of the project was Brigonzi. There were guest tours. Soon the premises became unusable, and the theater moved to an old stone building on Vetrenoy Street. To repair and rework it was spent 22 thousand rubles. The theater occupied the second floor, and at the first there were trading rows.

In 1852 this building burned down. The theater began to play performances in private houses, which more or less were suitable for this. But the troupe did not have its own building, as well as the scenery, costumes, props. Artists had to carry something with them, buy things locally or quickly make them.

At the end of the 19th century the theater was located in a private house owned by Fainitsky. Here he played several seasons. In 1882 the theater moved to the house of J. Lurie (a petty bourgeois). Here there were the enterprises of EI Nelyusko, AA Cherepanov and NA Borisov.

Today the theater remains true to its traditions. His repertoire is expanding, it includes productions and modern genres.
