Designations Alphabet Characters On Canon Lenses

Let's see what all these letters and numbers mean on lenses. This will help in the future when choosing new lenses.

L - informs us about the accessories of the lens to the line of professional lenses Canon Luxury. Such lenses necessarily exist in the arsenal of professional wedding and family photographers.

EF - tells us about the way the lens is attached to the camera or bayonet, as professionals say.

EF-S is another kind of bayonet. Usually, this type of attachment occurs in cameras that have an incomplete frame matrix (kropnutyu) - amateur mirror or semi-professional camera line canon. EF-S lenses are not suitable for EF bayonet cameras.

IS (Image Stabilizer) - the lens is equipped with an optical image stabilization system . Allows to remove from hands on longer exposures. But do not strongly rely on this function, and if necessary, it is better to use a tripod.

DO (Diffractive Optical Elements) - the optical design of the lens uses diffractive optical elements. Due to this, the mass and dimensions of the lens are reduced, without losing the quality of the optics.
