Delicate cultivation: cannes

To decorate household plots, courtyard cottages and large rooms are used a variety of types and varieties of ornamental plants. Cannes can be called one of the most interesting species. These are large plants with beautiful spiky flowers. Cultivation of canna is delicate - they require increased attention and patience.

A bit of history

These are the flowers of the subtropical zone, brought to Europe from the Antilles in 1570. In nature, they are found along the banks of streams and rivers, on sunny places. At first they were grown because of spectacular large leaves. In the second half of the XIX century, plants with beautiful flowers were planted in France. The first large-colored variety was obtained in 1889 by the Lyons gardener. She was called "Madame Crozie" - in honor of his wife.

Appearance

The height of the canna can be up to two meters. Leaves are dense, leathery, on small petioles or sessile. Long they can be 50 cm, width - 25. Flowers spiked, located on a high stem. Their color depends on the variety. The leaves can be sizo-green, burgundy-red, bright green, and the flowers - yellow, white, orange, red. The root is large, tuberous.

Landing

Growing canna, as already mentioned above, like "courteous." They are big sissies. So be patient. These plants multiply by dividing the tubers. First they are germinated in the room, planted in a light sandy land. The ambient temperature should be about +15 - 18 degrees. Then the tubers are divided into several parts in such a way that each of them has 2 - 3 eyes. As you understand, this is an ordinary ocular growth. Cannes grow from such nodules, planted in a pot 13 - 16 cm deep. There a mixture is added, consisting of turf and humus earth (1: 2), as well as a small amount of river sand.

Care

If you want to decorate this spectacular plant with a plot of land, remember that you can plant it in the open ground only in early June. The fact is that cannes are very poorly tolerated by frost. As already noted above, these are subtropical plants. Therefore, they are also demanding on the soil. It should be highly fertile. Cannes, the cultivation of which in the future requires abundant watering, weeding and loosening, prefer to grow in a warm sunny place. This must be taken into account. Feed them preferably with mineral or organic fertilizers every two weeks.

Cannes in the design of the site

Cannes will look very nice on any site. Effectively, plants appear planted in small groups, 6 to 9 bushes each. The distance between the flowers should be 50 - 80 cm. It is better to plant these large plants in the background of the flower beds, otherwise they will cover all the other flowers with their wide leaves. Arrange the composition from the cane, for example, next to a wall or a fence.

Advice

And at last two small councils.

  1. In autumn, cut the leaves and stalk so that there is a small stalk on the tuber. Store the planting material in the basement at a temperature of +10 degrees Celsius;
  2. In summer, when watering, moisten leaves of plants. They accumulate a lot of dust, because of which the cannes lose their attractiveness.

All of the above will help you make their growing more effective. Cannes is a very capricious plant, one of the most fastidious decorative flowers used to decorate rooms and plots. However, with some effort and patience, you will get a simply gorgeous flower for your apartment or yard!
