Created the world's first beer with probiotics

Do you need a reason to allow yourself to drink more beer? Scientists from Singapore took care of this. They managed to create a drink that, besides alcohol, also contains probiotics. Now scientists say that their beer can help you improve digestion and immunity, although this remains to be proved.

Production Difficulties

On the shelves of shops you can find a lot of dairy products based on probiotics, but no one has yet been able to come up with a beer that would also contain them. This is quite difficult, mainly because the beer contains hop acids that limit the growth and survival of probiotics. These difficulties were instigated by scientists from the University of Singapore to try to cope with them.

Overcoming difficulties

They managed to develop sour beer, which can support a probiotic strain, known as Lactobacillus paracasei L26. This particular probiotic was previously found in the human intestine. There is also some evidence that he can regulate the immune system.

"To create this beer, we used a lactic acid bacteria," explains Chiang Mei Zhi Alkin, who developed the beer. - This bacterium will use sugar, which is in the wort to produce lactic acid, resulting in the production of tart beer. In the final product, the production of which will take about a month, will contain about 3.5% of alcohol. "

Controversial probiotics

But why should we use probiotics? Are they so useful for the body? The evidence in favor of this assertion is mixed. Some doctors recommend taking them along with large doses of antibiotics to protect the intestinal bacteria and prevent diarrhea. It is also believed that probiotics can help reduce the risk of developing Clostridium difficile infection, as well as in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

Although people with health problems may be useful to take probiotics, the opinions of doctors regarding healthy people are different. The researchers argue that the beer they develop can help "boost immunity," but this is a controversial statement. In 2011, the staff of the European Food Safety Control Authority found that these claims had no scientific evidence, and in fact, companies were forbidden to make such statements about their products.

In any case, given the recent expansive growth of the beer market, one can expect that probiotic beer will also find its customers. Researchers have already received a patent for their discovery, not to allow others to copy their recipe, and are hoping to start producing it on a commercial scale.
