Carpet from polypropylene: reviews, features, pluses and points. How to choose a carpet

It is difficult to imagine a cozy and warm house without a carpet. And how it's nice to walk barefoot and play in the evenings with a child! And despite the fact that some people call the carpet a "dust collector", designers continue to use it as one of the stylish elements in interior design. Today, synthetic flooring is more in demand, including a polypropylene carpet. Customer feedback, properties, advantages and disadvantages of such products are presented in our article. But first, let's find out what to look for when choosing a carpet.

Tips for choosing a carpet

The material from which the carpet is made determines not only the cost of the product, but also directly affects its following characteristics:

  • Resistance to pollution - how quickly the carpet becomes soiled, how difficult it is to clean it;
  • The ability to maintain an original appearance for a certain time;
  • Wear of the product;
  • toxicity;
  • Fireproof properties.

Modern carpets are made of natural (sheep wool, silk, cotton), artificial (viscose) and synthetic materials (polyamide, polyester, polypropylene). Products from them have both advantages and disadvantages. For example, viscose carpet in appearance and properties is almost inferior to silk, and costs several times cheaper.

To choose a quality carpet, you need to study the properties of each material, taking into account the room for which the product is purchased. Excellent characteristics are carpets from polypropylene. Consider this material in more detail.

Description and types of carpets from polypropylene

The first sign of a polypropylene carpet is its unusual brightness at a low enough, democratic price. This carpet is made of a material of synthetic origin. Polypropylene fiber has a very simple structure, which includes only hydrogen and carbon molecules. A special feature of this synthetic substance is chemical inertness. This means that the conceived color can only be obtained when a polypropylene carpet is directly made. Reviews of the owners of such products confirm that it can not be painted at home.

Of polypropylene fiber, the base of the carpet and pile are also made. Depending on the structure distinguish such carpets:

  • Looped;
  • Single-level (loops of the same size);
  • Multi-level (loops of different sizes);
  • Cut (with a cut loop);
  • Loop-cut (cut loops and pile).

The choice of type of coating depends on personal preferences and the conditions in which the product will be used.

Manufacturing technology

In the production of carpets from polypropylene, 3 types of fibers are used:

  1. BCF fiber. The raw material for this material is waste from oil refining. As a result of mechanical action, a strong and dense synthetic thread is obtained. Carpets made of it are the cheapest and less secure, respectively.
  2. Heat Set-Fiber. Threads obtained from this raw material are most often used in the manufacture of carpet. Products made of such fibers feel like woolen to the touch. The shelf life of carpets from Heat Set-fiber is 4-12 years.
  3. Frise-fiber. Polypropylene yarns are created by twisting two Heat Set fibers. As a result of this treatment, the polypropylene yarn becomes rough, and the surface of the carpet is curly. If you choose a children's carpet made of polypropylene, then products from twisted fibers are obtained not only more vivid, but also as safe as possible for health. The cost of such a product will also be an order of magnitude higher than that of cheap and less qualitative fibers.

Polypropylene carpets: properties

The advantages of polypropylene can be assessed through its main characteristics. Among all synthetic materials, polypropylene carpets are in high demand. The properties of the material are as follows:

  • Low hygroscopicity (has a low moisture retention coefficient);
  • strength;
  • Resistance to pollution;
  • Resistance to the effects of most chemical reagents;
  • Increased heat resistance;
  • Low fire safety;
  • Non-permanence;
  • Durability, brightness and brilliance of the figure;
  • Antistatic.

Carpeting made of synthetic polypropylene has low wear resistance and durability. The period of its operation usually does not exceed three to four years.

Advantages and disadvantages

Carpeting of polypropylene has several advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of the material include:

  • Low cost: polypropylene - the cheapest material from all synthetic coatings;
  • Antistatic properties;
  • Ease of care;
  • Absence of allergic reactions;
  • Durability and brightness of paints.

Disadvantages of polypropylene carpets:

  • Environmental friendliness at a low level;
  • Low wear resistance and fragility;
  • Instability to deformations.

To preserve the appearance of the product, it is not recommended to store it in a folded state. Otherwise, it quickly deforms. Care is very simple - periodically clean with a vacuum cleaner or using detergents for synthetic materials.

Is the carpet of polypropylene harmful?

One of the disadvantages of polypropylene carpets, as well as of any other synthetic materials, is their low ecological compatibility. In turn, this factor gives cause for buyers to think about the toxicity of the coating. In fact, a number of studies have been carried out that have proved that the environmental safety of polypropylene products is within the norm. Polypropylene carpets do not cause harm to health, and their advantages far exceed minimal shortcomings. In addition, synthetic materials are hypoallergenic, which is another plus in favor of their safety.

Polypropylene carpet for the children's room

Carpet for a child's room must meet the following characteristics:

  • Hypoallergenicity;
  • Naturalness;
  • softness;
  • Ease of care.

Despite the advantages of natural materials, they have one significant drawback - the ability to cause allergic reactions. In other respects, three of the four criteria correspond to a children's carpet made from polypropylene. This material is hypoallergenic and easy to clean. Polypropylene products are made of a wide variety of shapes and colors, with a long nap and a pleasant to the touch surface.

Carpet made of polypropylene: customer reviews

According to buyers' feedback, it's easy to understand that a polypropylene carpet product is available in almost every home. And most buyers are satisfied with its functionality.

Firstly, the polypropylene carpet, according to reviews, is ideal for hallways and corridors, that is, for places with increased terrain. It is not trampled down and easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, and with a damp cloth and detergent.

Secondly, polypropylene carpet has excellent antistatic properties, which is its big advantage.

Thirdly, there is such a coating is much cheaper than, for example, a carpet of viscose, and in appearance it is in no way inferior.

As practice shows, polypropylene carpet can not be washed, since it strongly deforms and loses its appearance.
