Canvas fabric: composition and photo

A canvas fabric is a canvas. Her homeland is England. Cloth is heavy, very dense. It happens from pure flax or with the addition of some other impurities. It was originally used for sewing sails, so its second name is tarpaulin canvas.

Application of tissue

The name of the fabric originated from the Dutch word pressening, which has the meaning "shell". Canvas fabric is widely used in human economic activities. From it sew tents, tents, covers, backpacks, shelters for agricultural products, for various purposes. It is used for sewing covers for transport. Widely used for the manufacture of special clothing, mittens and military products. It is still actively used to cover boats and protect elements of ships. Even now they make sails from the canvas.

During the First World War this material became very popular. A canvas fabric, the composition of which provided its low cost, allowed to replace expensive and scarce at that time skin. Soldiers' boots, belts, raincoats and mittens were made of material. With the appearance of a torn opening, the product was very easily repaired. To do this, it was enough to put a patch.

Fabric structure

A canvas fabric is made of cotton, jute or linen thread. Sometimes they are used in mixing. And sometimes 100% are threads of the same species. In general, manufacturers use 50% cotton and 50% flax. Also, flax is used in pure form without impurities. The density of the fabric allows it to be used in various fields: construction, metallurgy, the army, and agriculture. Russian canvas fabric, GOST 15530-93, most often has the article number 11252, 11292, 11211, 11255. These numbers are added with letter designations that show the type of impregnation. Density of the fabric varies from 350 to 700 g / square. M.

Sell the material in rolls, the width of which is usually 90 cm. The main colors offered by the manufacturers: khaki, orange, straw, dark green.

Types of tarpaulin impregnation

The impregnations with which the canvas is treated give it new properties. The fabric becomes refractory, waterproof or biostable.

Designations of impregnated fabrics (abbreviations on the first letters of words):

- SKPV is a light-resistant combined increased water resistance;

- PV - increased water resistance;

- SCOP is a light-resistant combined fire-retardant impregnation;

- OP - simply fireproof impregnation;

- SKP - light-resistant combined (water-resistant-biostable) impregnation.

Waterproof impregnation

If a waterproof impregnation of SCPV or PV is used, the material acquires the ability to resist penetration of water from one side. The canvas fabric, which acquires such properties, is indispensable in the manufacture of tents, awnings, shelters for transport, machinery and equipment. It also produces special clothes that can protect against moisture. These are jackets, overalls, raincoats, suits, mittens.

Water resistance is measured by the number of mm of water column.

Such impregnation is applied to canvas of the following types: 100% linen, half-linen (50% cotton, 50% linen) and semi-jute.

Products made of waterproof canvas, have an article, in which there are letters of PV and SKVV. For example, article 11293 SCPV (semi-linen fabric with waterproof impregnation) is used for awnings and overalls.

Fireproof impregnation

Fire resistance is an important property acquired by a tarpaulin after using a special tool. A canvas fabric with such characteristics is used in the metallurgical industry. From her clothes clothes welders, firefighters, metallurgists and people who have contact with flammable objects. The degree of fire resistance is determined by the ability to withstand high temperatures and is measured by the number of seconds for which the fabric does not melt or burn. Fire, falling on the tarpaulin, immediately goes out.

This kind of impregnation is suitable for semi-liner, jute and semi-jute canvas.

Products, made of fireproof material, have an article in which there are letters OP. For example, 11292 OP - semi-linen fabric with refractory impregnation. It is used for tailoring of overalls.

Biostable impregnations

These impregnations endow the tarpaulin with antipollution characteristics. This allows you to use it when creating formwork, foundations, in land works, in logging facilities, in all those places where there is a large number of microorganisms. Such impregnation is used for jute and semi-jute canvas.

Types of products made of canvas cloth

A canvas fabric is not only shelters, tents and overalls. From it, and now sew fine practical things for daily use.

For example, a canvas backpack is a very strong and modern accessory. It is often used by hunters and fishermen. It is not rubbed, it is easily erased, and the back is not hot when you wear it. Backpacks are sewn from waterproof fabric. For tourists and the military offer a wide selection of bags of various sizes for every taste. The main goal - it is convenient to place inventory, equipment, things in the backpack. Therefore, such products are equipped with a variety of different pockets and compartments.

Also from this fabric are strong straps, which, after decorating with rivets, look very stylish. For dogs, collars and leashes are made from it.

Why are military tents still sewed from tarpaulins

It is obvious. The fabric has a number of positive properties:

  • Environmentally friendly material;
  • The water resistance can be 330 mm of water column;
  • Perfectly protects from wind and cold;
  • Fabric can be used for a long time;
  • Resistant to low temperatures;
  • Well ventilated;
  • Does not absorb dust;
  • When wet quickly dries;
  • Does not form a static voltage;
  • Is a natural antiseptic;
  • Delays ultraviolet radiation ;
  • Stand up to a fire;
  • If the tarpaulin has caught fire, then during combustion it does not emit toxic substances;
  • It can weaken the radiation from the computer, TV and radio in half;
  • Does not stretch and does not deform;
  • When folded, does not take up much space.

For the same reason, tarpaulins are used to make awnings for trucks, where military transport is carried. Material used for such purposes is verified and approved by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. It should be a high-quality canvas cloth. The photos below show several options for military tents.

Now the tarp is not used as often as before. New developments, synthetic fabrics, film, plastic and other materials have replaced new products.

At the same time, it's too early to say goodbye. There are many niches where the tarp used is still indispensable because of its high quality and relatively low cost. Till now it is actively produced by numerous factories of Russia and the world.
