Can I put a tile on the wooden floor? And how to do it correctly: a description of the process

Ceramic tiles are considered an ideal material for walls and floors of rooms exposed to moisture and temperature changes. This, as a rule, kitchens, bathrooms, baths. True, the very process of its laying is associated with certain difficulties, due to the need for an appropriate basis and some experience of similar work in the home master. As for the second, here on the proceeds will come skillful hands and a desire to realize what has been conceived at all costs. But regarding the grounds - a controversial issue. Without proper knowledge, it is indispensable, all work must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the technological process, non-compliance is fraught with the fact that eventually the flooring will turn out to be of poor quality and will not be able to perform the required functions. In principle, to date, hand-made repairs - an occupation, you might say, even fashionable, so that many craftsmen have in this regard at least rudimentary knowledge about the technology of carrying out certain work. Nevertheless, at times there are situations that pose an impasse for the unordinary setting of the question. For example: "Can I put a tile on the wooden floor ?" Agree, this does not come to everyone, because, as a rule, the laying of ceramics is usually conducted on a concrete foundation. And not on wood. However, there are sometimes situations when it is literally vital to put the tile on a wooden floor - in a bath, for example, or in the kitchen of a private house. What to do in this case? It's just a whim of nothing understanding in the finishing works of the owner or is this really possible? Let's try to answer this difficult question. So, is it possible to put a tile on the wooden floor?

On the compatibility of ceramics and wood

In principle, here you can do just a few words. These two materials are almost incompatible. And "to make friends" between them is possible only by creating special conditions. The tree can not stand the instability of the temperature background, constantly changing its dimensions when it changes. It is not difficult to imagine what will happen to ceramics, under which, so to say, live their own, special life lumber, staying in constant motion. The tile, of course, will start to crack, move away from the base, and under the impact of loads, chips will appear. In turn, the tree, densely "packed" under the ceramics, can not get much needed air, because of what will start to rot and deform. In general, it turns out a kind of vicious circle. Is it possible to break it? How to put a tile on a wooden floor in the bathroom or in the kitchen to the owner of the same private house who can no longer see without tears how his wood flooring becomes less attractive every day from the constant exposure to moisture or temperature changes? Let's say at once: you can do it. But you need to do only if there are really good reasons, because the procedure for preparing the wooden foundation will take a lot of time, in addition, it will require a lot of solid expenses, strength and money. Are you ready to part with both the first and the second? Well, in a good way. As they say, nothing is impossible. If you really want to, why not try it. True, you will have to thoroughly study the technology of the process and choose the appropriate option for your case.

When the procedure is impossible

Our house masters are sometimes rather capricious and stubborn. Here you need a ceramic tile on a wooden floor - and that's it. And the last one and it was mounted just recently, the house here almost the other day settled. Here is the option, when, unfortunately, please yourself will not succeed. It will be necessary to refuse such an undertaking in any case. Because a new wooden floor covering will be acclimatized for at least three years, accustomed to unusual conditions, and shrink, the endings of which must certainly wait. And only then carry out the plans.

A few words about the base

So, what has in the asset as the base basis the one who set out to put the tile on the wooden floor? We have already spoken about the fact that the new coverage is not subject to such arrangement. So, as a base, the home master will most likely have three types of floor covering. This is a worn out and lost appeal boards, lying on relatively strong logs, a floor of plywood or fiberboard, also disheartening in appearance, but still reincarnated, and a relatively strong, normally in existence board board, which requires the laying of tiles due to established Circumstances. Regardless of which option is available, the home master will have one task: to create a strong and even base, suitable for laying ceramics. The difference will be the type of repair work and their volume. Therefore, before putting the tiles on the wooden floor - in the bathroom, bath, hallway, in the kitchen, it is not important - you need to carefully study the available base and choose the appropriate method of preparation. In fact, there are two. It is dry and wet. But in any case, one thing needs to be remembered: putting the tile on a wooden floor without screed and careful preparation of the base will not work. Strictly speaking, difficulties, especially those created by one's own hand, will have to be overcome in any case. And to make it easier for the domestic craftsman, we'll tell you in detail about all the training options.

Dry alignment

The principle of it is to create an additional rough layer under the lining on the existing base. This can be done by installing plywood sheets - always waterproof - directly on the existing "native" base, creating an additional floor covering on the lags with a gasket between the old and new floor of the insulation and using ready-made sets of adjustable floors that are mounted over the already worn out base. In addition, today there is another material at the disposal of those who wish to put the tile on a wooden floor - GVL-plates. They not only successfully replace the plywood, but, thanks to a special composition, will help create a normal microclimate for the boards of the base base.

Pros and cons of the dry method

This option of leveling the floor for the tile is considered the most common. Which is not surprising, since he has a lot of advantages and only one drawback. The first is the speed of work. Align the floor in this way, you can quickly enough, without interruptions between the stages, which often slow down the process of repair. In addition, if the option with lags is chosen, the insulating qualities of the surface can be markedly increased due to the lining of the insulation. Well, the third plus - the creation of a minimal load on the already old floor that does not differ with special qualitative characteristics. As for the minuses, he, as we have already mentioned, only one - this way of leveling "eats" the height of the room. Therefore, in rooms with low ceilings, it is sometimes not practical to use it.

Wet method

In fact, this is the same screed, the difference is that they make it on a wooden surface and with some reservations. The latter include that, firstly, it should be lightweight (no more than three centimeters) due to the not very good condition of the wooden floor and its inability to bear significant loads, and secondly, do it not over the entire surface, but with gaps Along the perimeter. This kind of floating option. Thanks to this trick, the ceramic coating will not suffer from the movement of wooden elements, which in any case will not be able to calm down in any way.

Advantages and disadvantages of the screed

Here, in principle, everything is relatively arbitrary. Unconditional advantage of the method can be considered that it practically does not affect the height of the room, and a huge disadvantage is that the procedure itself is quite long, requiring considerable interruptions between the stages. But sometimes someone who is looking for an answer to the question of whether it is possible to put a tile on a wooden floor can not be chosen. If the screed is the only acceptable option, then it is necessary to reconcile with temporary losses.

Well, now, when the theory is sorted out, let's go directly to the process itself.

Preparing the old floor

Whichever method of alignment the home master chooses, the old board base in any case requires preparation. Put the tile on the wooden floor in the bathroom, and in a less exposed to moisture room without conducting preliminary works on repair and cleaning of the base surface will not succeed.

First of all, it is necessary to check the integrity of the floorboards and the lag itself. If some elements have become worthless, they need to be replaced. Then you need to remove all the paint. If you plan to make an additional floor covering on the logs, then the basic leveling is not required, but if plywood, gypsum board, particle board or wet screed is used, you will need to arm yourself with a grinder and carefully hang all the humps. Then the old floorboard should be treated with antiseptic and water-repellent impregnation. The existing slots should be puttyed whenever possible. And after that, drill the ventilation holes. And only then proceed to leveling.

The process of leveling without screed

In principle, there is nothing complicated. If an additional floor covering is created on the logs, first the supports are installed with a 30 cm pitch between them, then the insulation is laid, after which everything is sewn up with a moisture-proof plywood. If you plan to align the prepared plank base with just plywood or sheets of GVL, they are attached directly to the base surface by screws. All the resulting seams and cracks along the perimeter should be sealed. Excellent for this purpose foam. At the end of the installation work, a new surface is primed. Experts advise not to save and purchase "Betonokontakt".

Note!

An important point! If the master decided to put the tile on the wooden floor in the bath with his hands or in the bathroom, that is, in those rooms that are most susceptible to moisture, then before leveling it is necessary to lay a waterproofing layer on the board surface. It can be thick polyethylene, bituminous paper, and roofing felt.

Filling the screed

In this case, regardless of the place in which the work is carried out, the layer of waterproofing is mandatory. After that, a reinforcing mesh is put on it, and on the perimeter of the room the sides of a special tape are mounted, which in the language of specialists is called a damper. Remember, we mentioned that the screed should be not monolithic, but floating? This limiter will create the necessary conditions. After that, you can pour any suitable mixture for screed. It is best, of course, to take a leveling composition. After drying (this process should be given no less than two weeks), the surface is primed. On this question "can I put a tile on the wooden floor" is considered closed. Now you can. Why, in fact, it's time to start after the primer dries.

Laying tiles

So, how to put the tile on a wooden (photo of the end result see below) the floor? Yes, just like the usual concrete base. Now, after competent preparation, there will be no problems. The only nuance to which you should pay attention: tile adhesive is better to buy is not ordinary, but more durable, designed for porcelain stoneware. Choose the most vending layout scheme (traditional, diagonally, brick, etc.) and proceed to the process. If you select a diagonal, then start from the center. If the other way is from the most prominent angle, that the pruning is not noticeable. The adhesive composition is applied directly to the base, the rows are stacked strictly under the control of the level. Try to ensure that the adhesive layer is not very thick, since it creates an additional load on the already insufficiently solid foundation, which is the wooden floor. After laying, grouting is carried out. You can do this one day after the end of the whole process.

Conclusion

What conclusion can be drawn? As we found out, you can put a tile on a wooden floor. The main thing is to correctly conduct all the necessary preparatory work and create a reliable and even foundation for the tile.
