Calvary is ...? What is actually Golgotha?

There are some terms, the meaning of which can vary greatly. And this can happen not only because of the context, but also because of the several semantic colors that these terms have. In order not to look stupid in this or that situation, people try to study similar words. However, there are times when a person can not comprehend the essence of a certain concept. For example, many people do not know what Golgotha is. And if anyone understands that it is a mountain in Jerusalem, he does not know at all what other meaning this word has. In order to shed light on the mystery of the concept of Calvary, we will plunge into the history of the origin of Christianity.

Mount Calvary

From Hebrew, the word "Golgotha" is a "frontal place". In other words, the territory where people were executed. In Christianity, this term embodies one of the most important shrines and places of worship of all Christians. According to the tales, Golgotha is the name of the mountain on which Jesus Christ was crucified.

Thus, this place is the personification of the end of the earthly life of the son of God and the beginning of his heavenly stay until the Last Judgment.

For the history of Calvary, as the place of the crucifixion of Jesus, plays an important enough role. It should be remembered that important or even crucial historical events have flared up here. It is not known exactly what happened on Calvary, if we do not take into account the classical version of events. Therefore, at the present time, all events from the life of Jesus Christ are thoroughly studied in order to shed the light of truth on them.

The historical location of the place

If we talk about Calvary as a "frontal place", where Jesus Christ met his destiny, then it must have real geographical coordinates. Given the traditions of the 1st century AD, which prevailed then in Jerusalem, Golgotha was outside the walls of the city. This was done in order not to be profaned by the unholy action (execution), the sacred boundaries of the city. Therefore, in the I century, Calvary was in the north-west of the city. Nowadays, in this place is located the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, located in the area of the old quarter of Jerusalem.

At the moment it is, in fact, an ordinary building in which are located three Christian shrines: the Holy Sepulcher, Golgotha, the plate of the Anointing. There are other versions of the historical location of Calvary. Some scholars believe that this place was located in the north of Jerusalem in close proximity to the Damascus Gate. There is a legend that Golgotha is the burial place of Adam himself, but there was no evidence of this fact.

A different understanding of the word "Calvary"

There is an expression: "Everyone will ascend to Calvary." On the expanses of domestic countries, this expression underwent small changes and therefore sounds like this: "everyone is carrying his own cross." Although these are two different sentences, the meaning is the same.

It should be remembered that Jesus sacrificed himself for the salvation of mankind. He preached love and understanding, however his father is the lord of heaven, or God became angry with people, so we all carry our own cross in life, we go up to our Calvary. In this context, "Golgotha" and "cross" personify problems, life troubles, personal suffering and other obstacles that prevent progress in life.

Many theologians interpret this judgment differently. In their opinion, one who is able to ascend to Calvary, is worthy of forgiveness and life success. In other words, overcoming difficulties, we repeat the feat of Jesus, we experience his sufferings. Everyone will ascend to Golgotha, because all people are God's creatures, the same as Jesus himself. In modern history, the word "Golgotha" is used in other meanings, for example, to denote a place where a person is already very unsweetened.

Norilsk Golgotha

Very often the term "Calvary" is used to characterize places where a person is subjected to inhuman tortures or thrown into completely unfit for life conditions. In the history of the USSR there is a rather unpleasant page that tells about the hard labor of prisoners in places of deprivation of liberty of the GULAG system. "Norilsk Golgotha" is the invented name of the correctional plant located in the north of modern Russia, beyond the Arctic Circle. The place is interesting because its construction took place swiftly, and most importantly - by the hands of the very prisoners who were serving their sentence there. The special mortality of people was due to the fact that the prisoners worked day and night to increase the rate of production. This fact causes the notoriety of the Norilsk Mining Complex as one of the most appalling places of detention of the NKVD system.

Christian symbols

The Christian religion is full of different symbols. One of them is the cross of Calvary.

This symbolic symbol is represented in the form of an Orthodox cross, which is on Mount Calvary, usually depicted in the form of steps on either side of the cross. Under the steps are the skull and bones, which indicates the death that is constantly present in this place. From the base of the cross there is a spear and a cane with a sponge.

In modern Christian traditions the symbol of the cross of Golgotha is practically not used, with the exception of embroidery on the anal and parama.

Conclusion

So, in the article we resorted to the facts that allowed us to find out that "Golgotha" is not only the historical site of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but also a spiritual term with deep meaning. Nevertheless, scientists are still studying this historical phenomenon with the aim of its most accurate knowledge. Perhaps, the term has a completely different meaning, which we do not know about.
