Calendula ointment - indications for use

Calendula ointment is a light brown mass, which differs can have a greenish tinge and characteristic odor. This drug, however, is poorly absorbed, but it has a reparative, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect.

In this preparation there are active against gram-positive bacteria essential oils and flavonoids. They take part in the production of collagen walls of blood vessels, regulate the colloidal state of the intercellular substance. Calendula ointment helps to accelerate the process of contraction of tissues around the wound, and thanks to its use, stimulation of granulation and epithelization of the wound defect occurs.

If a patient has chronic venous insufficiency, then edema, convulsions, pain, ulcers and trophic disorders, varicose eczema decrease.

After the ointment of calendula is applied, heat is felt, as it has a slight irritant effect. 1-2 hours after the application, the anti-inflammatory effect begins on the deeper layers of the skin.

Calendula Ointment: Instructions for Use

This drug is used in the presence of infected wounds, burns, cuts, anal fissures. It is also used for varicose disease of the legs and thrombophlebitis, in the presence of decubitus and trophic ulcers.

The drug should be applied to dry and clean skin. If there was a need to apply ointment on wounds with purulent discharge, then they must first be cleaned of necrotic tissues.

If the ointment of calendula is used for burns, cuts or wounds, then it must be rubbed until a feeling of warmth appears, and then covered with a sterile bandage. Be sure to wash your hands after applying the medicine. 2-3 times a day, the dressings are replaced. On an area equal to the knee joint, it is enough to apply 2-4 grams of ointment.

In the presence of anal cracks, tampons with ointment are injected into the rectum, but before that one must either wait for the spontaneous cleansing of the intestine, or put a cleansing enema.

To treat varicose veins, the drug is applied to the affected area and is not rubbed. Use the ointment of calendula from acne.

When carrying out therapy for trophic and varicose ulcers, the drug is used in the form of applications. First, the skin is washed and covered with zinc ointment, and then applied a thick layer of calendula ointment and covered with parchment paper, and then a bandage is applied. The duration of such treatment is up to three weeks, with bandages to be changed up to 3 times a day.

Among the possible side effects, it is worth noting the possibility of allergic reactions.

Contraindications to the use of calendula ointment is increased sensitivity to plants of the family Compositae.

This drug is poorly absorbed, so there is practically no risk of developing drug interactions. If glycerol and dimethylsulfoxide are used together with this ointment, this enhances its systemic absorption, and then the ointment penetrates deeper into the tissues at the sites of its application.

Since the mechanism of action of this medication on small children is not fully understood, it can not be applied until the age of six. After using the calendula ointment, there is no decrease in the reaction, so it is not contraindicated in driving vehicles. If a person smokes, this weakens the effect produced by this drug and accelerates the metabolism of flavonoids.

Since the ointment of calendula is applied only externally, we must not allow it to enter the mucous membranes.

Overdose of the drug with proper use is practically excluded, it is possible only in case of taking the ointment inside. If this happens, then the stomach is washed and antacids are prescribed .
