Many people of the post-Soviet space and the whole world bow down before the unprecedented heroism of the defenders of the Brest Fortress during the Nazi invasion of the territory of the Soviet Union. However, the Brest region is famous not only for the memorial complex dedicated to the heroes. There are a lot of unique nature reserves and sanctuaries, monuments of history, architecture and culture, many other interesting tourist sites.

Location

There is a Brest region in the southwestern part of the state of Belarus. In the south, it divides the border with Ukraine, and in the west - with Poland. The region is considered one of the most environmentally friendly in the country. About 36% of its territory is covered by forests, there are also marshy lowlands, which is typical for Polissya. Hydro resources of the Brest region are the rivers Pripyat, Shchara, Mukhovets, the Western Bug, many of their tributaries, large and small lakes. The climate here is quite mild, in winter it is rarely colder -6 ...- 8 degrees. The summer in the southeast of Belarus is not hot and long, which makes it possible to grow even grapes, apricots and peaches. The Brest region is a major transport hub. On its territory are international routes to Moscow, Warsaw, Vilnius, Kovel, motorways to Minsk and Grodno. Well developed and air, river, railway transport. The oblast consists of 16 districts, 3 regional and 18 district cities.

A short digression into the history

The Brest region was once called Beresteiska, presumably from the word "birch bark". In the tenth century, it was part of the ancient Turov principality, ruled by the descendants of Vladimir the Baptist of Russia. The proximity of Poland and Lithuania, as well as the location on an important trade route, made Berestenje the desired prey. He was conquered by the Poles, for him fought Lithuania and Prince Galitsky, who managed to capture these lands for a short time. The prince built here the stone church of St. Peter and the defensive fortress. This structure has opened the account of heroic perseverance of inhabitants in struggle against invaders, many times helping to withstand sieges and assaults. Since the XIV century, the Beresteye lands have become part of Lithuania. Subsequently, they repeatedly passed from hand to hand, belonged to Poles, then Russians, then Ukrainians, until finally in 1939 they became part of the Belarusian Soviet Republic. On its territory there are more than 1200 historical, about 300 archaeological and as many architectural monuments as evidences of tragic events and unprecedented heyday of this unique region.

Brestsky region, Brest region

The administrative center and the most visited tourist site of the region is the heroic Brest. By area, the Brest region ranks 12th in the region. The main part of its territory is located in Polissya, on the Pribug Plain. The Brest region (Brest region) includes many villages, several urban-type settlements and farms. Some of them are the objects of health, fishing and ecological tourism, others attract their monuments. So, in the village of Beloe Ozero, located on the shores of the same water body, there are several recreation centers, a health complex built according to the European standards chalet "Greenwood". Nearby is another lake - Rogoznyanskoe. On its shore there is a sanatorium "Berestie". An excellent recreation center is also near the village of Znamenka, located on the Western Bug. And in the village of Medno an ethnographic museum was opened. The tourists are also interested in the village of Chernavchitsy, where the Troitsky church is located, a unique architectural monument, the village of Terebun with the Grabovsky manor and the church of the Transfiguration of the Lord at the beginning of the 17th century.

Brest

Settlements with this name are in Germany, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, even in France. Brest (Brest region) in Belarus is located at the confluence of the Mukhavets river in the Western Bug. It is a large regional center with a population of about 330 thousand people. Its main attraction is the complex of the Brest Fortress, which remained a free island, when thousands of kilometers around the already brutalized fascists. For the first time about Brest (then Berestye) is mentioned in the "Tale of the Time Years". This city many times became an arena of military operations, was subjected to looting, destruction, flamed in the fires of fires. Nevertheless, its favorable location provided economic prosperity. Unfortunately, endless wars and natural disasters destroyed many unique buildings, built in the XIII-XVII centuries. Now the museum "Berestye", created on the site of the excavated ancient settlement, the Museum of the Saved Values, the railway is of interest. A railway station built in the XIX century, the ruins of the Bernardine convent, operating temples, churches, cathedrals.

Pinsk

Many cities of the Brest region are famous for their history. The large district center of Pinsk is one of them. It lies on the banks of the beautiful Pina River. For the first time about Pinsk says "The Tale of the Time Years". This city is the second in Belarus and the first in the Brest region according to the number of monuments of architecture available here. Unfortunately, most of them were destroyed during the long history of Pinsk. Of the remaining, the most popular are the Jesuit Collegium, the churches of St. Stanislaus, the Mother of God and Karl Baramei, the Butrimovich Palace, many other buildings built in the 17th-19th centuries, an ancient cemetery on Spokojnaya Street. Of modern, we can name embrasure of pillboxes, ship BK-92, memorials and monuments to Soviet soldiers, a beautiful embankment on the Pina River.

Baranavichy

This city, which is the administrative center of Baranavichy district, also keeps its glorious history. In the XVII century here was the mission of the Jesuits. The location on the straight stretch between Brest and Minsk served as the fact that in the 70s of the 19th century a railway appeared. Station and its locomotive depot. In Baranovichi there is even a Railway Museum, in which there are about 400 exhibits. Like other areas of the Brest region, Baranovichi has many historical and architectural monuments and unique natural sites. The Gorodishche settlement, founded in the beginning of the XV century, is especially notable. 33% of the territory of the district is occupied by forest tracts, there are two picturesque lakes - Domashevichskoe and Koldashevskoe, - a large reservoir Gat. To protect natural resources, two reserves have been established: Baranovichi and Stronga.

The city of Ivanovo (Brest region)

For many tourists it will be interesting to visit this small town, which local people call Yanovo. He began his existence as a village Porkhovo. But at the beginning of the XV century it was presented to Lutsk with a church, the bishop of which was Ian Laskovich. In honor of him, the village was renamed. It is well-known for the fact that Andrei Bobola, the patron of all Belorussian lands, preached here. He, who was already in his teens, was captured by Yanukovych in Ukrainian Cossacks and executed after inhuman torture. In the city on the place of execution a memorial sign is installed, and in the place where the saint was seized - two commemorative crosses. Bobol was buried in Pinsk, and after about forty years they exhumed. The body of the priest was imperishable. In 1938 he was ranked as Saints. Ivanovo (Brest region) is the administrative center of Ivanovo district.

Zapovednye Places

In the Brest region is the most famous reserve of the world - Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Almost all of its territory is covered with ancient forests, in which more than a thousand relict trees grow. According to the number of animals, birds and plants, the reserve has no equal in Europe. Many representatives of flora and fauna, including famous bison, are listed in the Red Book. But not only our smaller brothers are interested in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. There are also historical monuments, such as the Tyszkiewicz manor, the residence of Viskuli, the watchtower "Belaya Vezha", even the residence of Father Frost. The Brest region cares about its nature, therefore several reserves were created on its territory: "Pribuzhskoe Polesie", "Brest", "Bug" and "Barbastella", in which the largest colony of bats is protected.
