The article describes what a boycott is, for which it is declared. There are several historical examples of this action.

All at least once, but heard the word. It has long and firmly become a kind of synonym for protest, strike or other form of peaceful opposition. If you refer to the encyclopedia, it says that boycott is a form of political, civil, social or economic struggle, whose goal, by refusing to cooperate with a physical, legal entity or any organization, is to convey their ideas, demands or proposals. Naturally, such measures are applied when other ways of resolving difficult issues.

Examples

Boycott is a legitimate measure, a way of conveying one's desires and aspirations when no one listens to ordinary words or protests. The most frequent dissemination of the boycott was in the twentieth century in the period of mass wars, revolutions and political changes.

It should be noted that the boycott is a legitimate phenomenon (naturally, if it does not violate the law by its actions), and not only individuals, a group or an organization resort to it, but entire countries and political movements. The most striking example of this is the boycott of the US Olympic Games in 1980 in Moscow. This decision was made because of allegedly at the root of an incorrect decision to bring Soviet troops into Afghanistan. Nevertheless, the games are still held.

And one of the first mass and documented boycotts, whose conduct subsequently affected the state of things, was the boycott of cane sugar in England, since the bulk of it was produced by slaves in various colonies. This was the first impetus to the abolition of slavery. So a boycott is sometimes a very effective method to achieve your goal.

Another example of this action is the one-day boycott of German citizens by Jews in Germany in 1933. It was held as a sign of protest against the beginning of persecutions and discrimination on racial and cultural grounds.

If we talk about the roots of this word, it came from the English language. Charles Boycott - that's the name of one manager, whom the English farmers announced a boycott.

Effectiveness

Despite successful historical examples, such a form of protest does not always bear fruit. This is often understood by the organizers themselves, and so the boycott sometimes turns into a kind of popular or social movement whose goal is to identify unity with some people, beliefs or situations.

For example, in 2006, a number of Arab residents began to ignore the goods of Danish firms because the reporters of a journal in Denmark drew a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad. Obviously, journalists had nothing to do with businessmen, but nevertheless this protest lasted a very long time.

It is worth noting that you can not confuse the boycott with a strike. These are completely different concepts. But let's talk about strikes another time.
