Fans of video products offered in the modern market or on the Internet are likely to have noticed many times that an incomprehensible description with an invariably present word Rip (for example, HDRip or BDRip) is added to many videos. Let's see what it is.

What is Rip in general?

To begin with, Rip (hereinafter referred to as "rip") for movies, clips or clips generally means extracting video and audio from some type of storage medium such as an optical disc or converting a signal into a single file, say, when recording from HDTV.

If you consider the question of whether BDRip or HDRip - which is better, it is worth considering the very basic concepts. Let's see what the rips of these two types are.

What is BDRip?

As for BDRip, there is an unambiguous answer: it is converting video and audio components, say, a movie, into a single file of another format from a Blu-ray disc. This is done with the help of special programs. Typically, the resolution of the picture with this ripping is 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The conversion of sound and audio is done with the help of various codecs that allow to apply a sufficiently high compression ratio of the initial material and combine several inconvenient storage of complete information into one file, which after performing all the operations can be played either on the home or in the software player.

BDRip or HDRip: which is better? It all depends only on the ability to code the source data and from the programs used at the same time. But first things first. Let's look at the HDRip format.

What is HDRip?

In principle, if you understand, HDRip is a converted material from any HD-source high-definition. It can be, say, HDDVD, HDTV broadcast or BDRip, chosen as a source to reduce the size and change the original file.

As a rule, the resolution quality in this case is 1024 x 720 pixels, and even if the BDRip files with a resolution of 720p or 1080p are selected as the source for re-encoding. This conversion is carried out using the universal AVC codec.

Sometimes even in the designation HDRip you can find their own characteristics. So, for example, two types of writing, say, 720p and 720i, can be applied to picture quality. What is the difference? The fact is that in the first case the picture is formed entirely, and in the second case consists of a pair of images (the so-called interlaced scan).

Probably everyone has already made a preliminary conclusion. BDRip or HDRip: which is better? Naturally, on the basis of preliminary information, anyone will exclaim that the quality of HDRip is clearly inferior to BDRip. However, do not rush to draw conclusions. Not so simple.

What is the difference between HDRip and BDRip?

Now a few words about the main differences between these two rips. We have already said about the quality of the image. As for the final files themselves, they have different sizes and formats.

As a rule, a rip from a Blu-ray disc is saved as an .mkv file (a Matroska container) and usually has a size of about 3.5 GB or higher (depending on the quality of the picture and sound, the codecs and decoders used, etc.). .

In contrast, HDRip files can be represented as standard video data of the .avi or .mp4 format . Actually, the sound is usually encoded using LAME MP3 Encoder. Such files weigh 1.4-2.2 GB, and with maximum compression - even about 700 MB, which allows you to write them to regular CD-blank. It is probably already clear that the smaller the size (the greater the compression ratio), the worse the quality.

Which quality is better: BDRip or HDRIp?

In principle, as is already clear, BDRip is superior to HDRip in almost all respects. First of all, this concerns, of course, the image, which in the rip from the Blu-ray disc is clearly higher. The same can be said about the sound characteristics. For example, for HDRip you will never get a surround sound that has become more popular recently than 7.1 (it's something that is present on Blu-Ray discs, though not always).

Some might argue that 7.1 can be obtained by transcoding BDRip. Nothing like this. At best, 5.1 audio separation will be obtained, and not higher at all.

But now, understanding our topic ("BDRip or HDRip: what is better?"), Let's add a few words about the fact that it is very often possible to meet situations when the seemingly superior rip from the Blue-Ray disc is inferior as HDRip. The reason here is only one: the inability of the person who makes the ripping, properly use the means of transcoding the source material. It is clear after all that if, as people say, hands do not grow from there, you can spoil any candy.

Conclusion

In general, if we sum up a certain result, we can say that with the correct and qualitative transformation of the source material, the final quality of BDRip is an order of magnitude higher than HDRip. This is not even discussed. But here everything depends on the skill and practice of using the appropriate software (applications) and codecs and decoders preferred for conversion.

However, I think, even from such a brief description, it is clear what distinguishes the two above terms, and what quality, if the right approach is better.
