Author's note explaining the text - that's what the remark is

The above elements of the work include description, inserted episodes and copyright digressions. And any of these terms can answer the question: "What is a remark?"

The essence of the term "remark"

This word is borrowed from the French language (remargue), in translation it means "note", "remark", "author's footnote". In works, they are given a significant, and sometimes the main role. Dynamic side of the novel or story is a developing story, but authorial digressions, footnotes, remarks explaining it or supplementing it, refer to the static side. This composition-stylistic device can be very diverse. With his help, the author can resort to autobiographical memories, show his emotional attitude to action, which in literature has been called the lyrical digression.

Multifunctionality of the remark

Author's remarks can take even the form of an epilogue, which completes the plot. Sometimes this literary device is reduced to indicating the place and time of the action, sometimes author's translations of the heroes' dialogues are carried out for the text. So, in "War and Peace" such footnotes take two or three pages. Such a literary device as an allusion, the form of which can take a remark, relates the reader to the previous plot events. There is an author's note, which tells about the subsequent plot turns. There are ironic, moralizing reflections and clarifications of the author. All of the above methods are able to answer the question of what the remark in the literature is.

The place of a remark in drama

A special place belongs to this literary and artistic reception in drama. Most often in the theater, the role of instruction, an explanatory note is given. Explain the actions, the character of the actors, their emotional state, place and time of action in the play - its main function. Usually in the text of a dramatic work, the place of the remark before the beginning of the action is an indication of the time of day, the location of furniture, the finding of a window or a balcony, and then in the course of the dialogue its place in parentheses. The author's note may indicate the tone of the conversation - (utters quietly or screams), suggests the actions of the characters conducting the dialogue - (getting the sword), their emotional state - (enters the excited Petrov). What is the remark in the play? This is a purely official part of the general text, which brings clarity into the plot of the play.

Metamorphoses of the term

Since the period of antiquity, the remark has undergone certain changes, but for a long time it was given a minor explanatory function - what the work is devoted to or what it is. Diderot, in order to completely subordinate the actor to his author's and director's ideas, turned the remark into an independent artistic and narrative part of the dramatic work. New scenic techniques developed by this reformer of the scene have turned the remark into whole instructions with a detailed description of everything that should happen on stage. Up to the pose, to a slight gesture of heroes. Detailed, detailed author's development of the future performance - that's what a remark by Denis Diderot, who was not only a major philosopher, but also a prominent French playwright of the late 18th century.

Remark as the main part of the work

Extensive footnotes in the dramatic works of Gogol. In general, the play consists of replicas (conversation of actors) and remarks (their movement and gestures, facial expressions and intonations). This caused a certain restriction of the artistic possibilities of the genre. To somehow compensate for this shortcoming, author's notes are increasingly expanding, a kind of literature appears, such as lesedrama, a drama for reading. "Little tragedies" of Pushkin and "Faust" of Goethe are its bright representatives. In them, the role of digressions, author's reflections, explanations of the plot is very great. In any case, one of the two components of the play, the role of which can not be overestimated, that's what a remark is.
