Athletics in Belarus. Origin and development

How did athletics develop in independent Belarus?

Alexander Lukashenko, the unchallenged leader of the republic, told the athletes about the need for high demonstration results and asked what measures he should take to achieve them. Since that time, the Athletics Federation of Belarus has actively started its work.

The construction of new stadiums began, sports schools, educational institutions, centers for raising qualifications are opened, coaches are motivated, funds are allocated for food, equipment and other needs. Naturally, with such an impeccable organization, athletes will have the desire to represent their country.

Birth of the Queen of Sports in Belarus

Athletics was born in Belarus back in 1913. It all started with a circle of sports lovers in the city of Gomel. The first technical school of physical education in Belarus was opened in 1930. Since that time, active training of personnel and athletes for worthy exits at international competitions began. As part of the USSR team, the Belarusian athletes started their starts from the 1954 Olympics in Helsinki and did not miss any Olympic competitions. During this time, athletes brought to the treasury of the country six gold, fifteen silver and thirteen bronze medals. The first gold at the Olympics was awarded to Mikhail Krivonosov in hammer throwing. The most sensational victory, which is proud of modern track-and-field athletics in Belarus, went to Julia Nesterenko, who received Olympic gold at a distance of 100 meters (Athens, 2004).

After the collapse of the Union in 1991, the Sovereign Athletics Federation of Belarus is independent of the IAAF. Since 1993, athletes have performed at international competitions by their independent team. Since that time, they have won for the country 19 championship medals (4-6-9).

The best athletes of Belarus

Track and field athletics in Belarus can be proud of its champions, among which is worth mentioning: the hammer thrower Ramuald Klim, Tatyana Ledovskaya (4x400m relay race), Ellina Zvereva, Yanina Korolchik, the legendary Julia Nesterenko (100 meters), Oksana Menkov. In the USSR team at the world championships in athletics, Belarusians won 46 medals (14-15-17). And the independent team of Belarus for the whole period since 1993, a piggy bank was replenished with 10-14-12 medals. Legendary achievements in the championships for the Belarusian team became famous hammer thrower, hero Ivan Tikhon.

He three times in a row became the world champion from 2003 to 2007. Speaking at the European Championships in Athletics, they obtained another 21 medals (7-8-6). And at the moment at the European indoor championship (in Belgrade, 2017), the country is represented by 19 athletes.

As we see, not only with its agricultural machinery, potatoes and unforgettable taste of condensed milk is the Republic of Belarus famous. Athletics here is developing at a rapid pace. The country can be proud of high achievements in sports on the world stage.

In Belarus there are 138 branches in the Youth and Sports School of Athletics and Athletics, where more than 32,000 participating 1380 trainers are training new stars. In cities across the country, various races, relay races and sporting events are held. Sports, especially athletics, became really prestigious in Belarus, and most importantly - accessible to every resident of the country.
