When studying history, written testimonies of past years are very important. Various sources call them differently: chronicles, annals, annals of history. This discrepancy arises because of the different methods of recording meaningful events, because different nations and states had their own notions of what would be important for descendants and what would not.

Origin of the word

For the first time this term began to occur in the records of the Roman chroniclers. The most significant events of the political and private life of the Roman townspeople were recorded in annual annals. This concept originated from the Latin anno, which means "year" in translation. The first annals were wooden or stone smooth boards, exhibited in front of the sanctuary or the residence of the high priest.

Summaries have been conducted for decades, and even centuries. Hence the expression "annals of history" arose. This meant the regular recording of the most important events. Over time, historical processes have ceased to be taken into account, and for some time the annals ceased to exist.

History of annals school

Prior to the beginning of the 20th century, historical sciences accumulated more historical knowledge, but did not analyze them. The need to revise the historical heritage arose in the first half of the 20th century. This is what young French historians Mark Block and Lucien Febvre did. A new direction of historians was grouped near the editorial office of the historical magazine "Annals". Hence the name for the entire group of scientists.

The purpose of the work of young scientists was to study the facts embedded in the annals of history. This movement did not study the periods of the reign of kings and dynasties, but society as a whole, together with the whole interweaving of political, economic, cultural and social ties. This approach required the involvement of data from many related disciplines. Historians had to analyze the data of ethnography, sociology, geography and other sciences that study the relationship of man in the state and in society.

At present, supporters of this science analyze the most varied annals of history. This requires great attention and involvement of various specialists in the work. The voluminous approach allows us to assess the significance of historical events in combination with the existing socio-political situation, emphasize the importance of this or that factor in the historical sense.
